Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
    10 (7) Cartoons – Witch Doctor

Not a new song by a long chalk, but I figured it was worth a mention afterHomer’s “trip” in an ambient water-tank as part of his homeopathic treatmentduring which he sang this tune which cracked me up.

4 Texas – In Our Lifetime

First single from their new album, “The Hush”, and it looks like their barrendays are now behind them, but it’s a shame this new single is a little barrenitself, sounding rather like a light same-tempo version of “Say What You Want”.

2 Fatboy Slim – Right Here Right Now

This track was tipped as a No.1 follow-up to his last No.1, “Praise You”,especially as for the past few weeks it has been featured in an Adidas advert. The song is okay but nothing special.

1 Westlife – Swear It Again *1st Week at No.1*

And yes I’m swearing again as yet another average song goes straight in at No.1,this time being a band who had to change their name before they released theirfirst single – turns out there was already a band called Westside.

Westlife are an Oirish 5-piece boy band. Sounds familiar? Sound like Boyzone? You won’t be surprised to hear that one of their managers is Boyzone’s leadsinger Ronan Keating.

This is the 12th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim – Praise You
  • 2. 911 – A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden – You Don’t Know Me
  • 5. Blondie – Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears – Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone – When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched – Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo – Flat Beat
  • 11. Martine McCutcheon – Perfect Moment
  • 12. Westlife – Swear It Again

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998

    18. Dario G & David Bowie – Sunmachine

It took me a while to warm to Dario G’s second single “Carnival De Paris”(No.5, June 98) but it took no time to warm to this one when I first heard it.The combination of a good dance tune and David Bowie couldn’t fail to impress,as did an earlier Bowie single, “Little Wonder”, making “Sunmachine” a singleof the week even though it only made No.17 in September last year.

I didn’t like Dario G’s first single, “Sunchyme” (Sept 97) though. It’s beenabout 14 years since one-hit wonders Dream Academy had a No.15 hit with “Lifein a Northern Town”. It was a slow affair, and a classic that has stood the testof time…

…and one of those songs that no-one should dare try and dancify, but nowDario G (whoever the hell he is) has done just that. Removing all the vocals, bar the backing singers chant, it has been speeded up, and whenever it cameon the radio, I had to turn it off very quickly, or I’d probably smash theradio.

I concluded at the time that
“A public flogging wouldn’t be enough for Dario G…”

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
