Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

25 The Supernaturals – I Wasn’t Built To Get Up * (R)————————————————-Following last year’s excellent, but non-charting, “Smile”, this new singleis also just as good but is a re-release as it was originally released lastJuly when it also missed the charts. At least one thing has been put rightthis week.

Now let’s hope they re-release “Smile”

    14 Lovestation – Teardrops :O ===

Dreadful cover of the dreadful Womack & Womack song which was just as irritatingin its original form as it is in this cover version – so it’s a successfulcover then (!)

    12 Charli Baltimore – Money

Girlfriend of the Notorious BIG gets a Top 40 hit. No doubt she’ll be singingother songs about him, so following “Money” (she’s raking it in no doubt sincehis crap records are now selling) we’ll get “No-one used to buy my recordsuntil I was dead” and “Sad waster who got killed after having Tupac offed”,allegedly.

    11 Catatonia – Strange Glue * !!!

Another single and Catatonia do it again. Not content with doing upbeatclass tunes like “Mulder & Scully”, “You’ve Got a Lot To Answer For” and”Road Rage”, Cerys and the band release a ballad, not about Tom Jones, butabout a couple who fit together as if gelled by ‘strange glue’.

The promo video is a lot less active than their last, “Road Rage”, but no lesspowerful for it.

6 Aqua – My Oh My

Fourth time unlucky. If you thought their run of instant No.1’s would neverend, well thankfully it has. This is no different to “Doctor Jones” and alsocomes complete with a 2.35:1 widescreen promo video 🙂

2 Will Smith – Just The Two Of Us

Not so much a cover of the Bill Withers classic but a cover-over since WillSmith just (c)raps over the original tune.

    1 (NEW) Spice Girls – Viva Forever * *1st Week at No.1*

Eight singles. Seven No.1’s and the sixth one to go straight in at the top.

Taken from my review of last year’s album “Spiceworld”…

‘”Viva Forever” is the longest track on the album clocking in at 5:09, and isone of the better tracks: slow with a backbeat, and a hint of Spanish guitarall the way through – one that should be released as a single next summer whenwe get some decent weather.’

Well, I got it all right apart from the last couple of words as the weather’sshite!

This is the sixth single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98
  • 3. Billie – Because We Want To
  • 4. Another Level – Freak Me
  • 5. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground
  • 6. Spice Girls – Viva Forever

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    31. Monaco – Sweet Lips

Monaco is Peter Hook‘s (New Order) latest band, and it’s about time that hehad some hits on his own. His last band outside of New Order was Revenge whoreleased a few singles including the superb, “Pineapple Face”, but none ofwhich made the Top 40.

Peter Hook was, until recently, married to Caroline Aherne (aka Mrs Merton, and one of the regulars on The Fast Show), and after their public scrap at theopening of Bill Wyman’s Sticky Fingers restaurant in Manchester between Hookand Caroline Aherne’s then-lover, Matt Bowers, one can’t help but feel thattheir first single, “What Do You Want From Me?”, was how Hook felt after thewhole thing, with the chorus being :

“What do you want from me?
It’s not how it used to be,
    You’ve taken my life away,
    Ruining every day.”

Since the scrap, things have really gone downhill for Caroline Aherne, butthings when downhill even faster for Matt Bowers. He quit his PR job to becomeCaroline Aherne’s agent. Then she dumped him on Boxing Day 1996. Then he wasdiagnosed with cancer and now he’s dead.

For Caroline, things haven’t been much better as another relationship failedand the last thing known was her spell in a drying-out clinic for alcoholics.

I first heard Caroline Aherne many years ago, as the Mrs Merton characterbegan life as one of Frank Sidebottom‘s characters, along with her baby, littleReggie Merton. There was no sign of Malcolm at that time, played by Craig Cash.

Also, she used to present a radio show on KFM Radio, as it was then known, inStockport, the station now being known as Signal Cheshire, and for my money, whereas Mariella Frostrup had the sexiest voice on TV, so did Caroline Ahernehave the sexiest voice on radio 🙂

For the record, Craig Cash also had a radio show on the same station in bothits incarnations, although I haven’t heard him on the station since sometimein 1996.

Peter Hook was one of the guests at the live show of Vic and Bob‘s “ShootingStars” when it appeared in Manchester, alongside Piccadilly Key 103’s(Manchester radio station) Pete Mitchell, plus Piccadilly Radio’s Becky Want(total babe), and Bez from the Happy Mondays. Well worth the money that show, and I just wish it was available on video 🙂

“What Do You Want From Me” made No.11 in March last year, while “Sweet Lips”made No.18 in May. They released a third single, but it bombed (No.55,September)

    The end bit :
