In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 15 new entries, 0 climbers, 2 non-movers & 23 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
15 new entries this week, 0 climbers,2 non-movers (Natalie Imbruglia at 2, and Aqua at 1), and 23 going down.
Big fallers include Gary Barlow (7 to 19), Texas (10 to 26), 187 Lockdown(16 to 27), Jon Bon Jovi (13 to 29) and Cast (14 to 31).
1. Spice Girls – what next?Since dumping their manager, they’ve been booed off the stage in Spainat an awards show, and when ready to perform in Italy…the audience weren’tas no-one turned up bar one seven-year-old boy with his Mum. The TV stationhad to hire 12 girls to stand by and scream while the rest of the public outsideignored as they walked by.
Today (Tuesday 19th November), the girls held a press conference stating thatthey are NOT going to split up, despite each member having talks last weekabout separate singing careers. In a couple of weeks they’ll be performing atthe Smash Hits Poll-Winners Party. How will the reaction fare there, esp. asthe new album has sold less than 300,000 in two weeks of the 1.4 million copiessent to the shops.
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
40 Bobby Brown – Feelin’ Inside
There was a time when Bobby Brown could be guaranteed a Top 10 hit, even whenhe ‘remixed’ some of his records and put them out again. Clearly his time isover. I just wish the records of his wife Whitney Houston would go the sameway.
39 David McAlmont/David Arnold – Diamonds Are Forever
The remix project of David Arnold‘s to do new versions of old James Bondhits takes a sharp turn for the worse. “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” wentTop 10, but this new track does very poorly indeed.
32 Jewel – You Were Meant For Me *
Canadian babe Jewel hits the Top 40 with a slow but steady song with breathyvocals, and appeared on the midweek Lottery show last week, but clearly that’snot helped unfortunately.
28 Happy Clappers – I Believe 97 :O ===
It was bad enough for this to enter the charts a second time, but THRICE?
25 Portishead – Over *
Slow. Bizarre. Portishead. Excellent.
18 Steps – 5, 6, 7, 8 :O ===
Presuming this is the one with 2 girls and 2 blokes singing about their”Romeo Romeo”, then this is abysmal. A dance crap-track that even Gina G wouldbe embarassed to be involved with.
9 Ocean Colour Scene – Better Day *
I’ve heard this several times, and it’s very good indeed. Another top tunefrom OCS.
8 Pulp – Help The Aged * !!!
Their first new single in 18 months and it seemed an odd choice at first,Jarvis and the band singing about the elderly, and the video featuring Jarvisgoing up and down stairs on a stairlift, part of it involving him seeminglytaking a stairlift to heaven…
A deserved Top 3 placing would have sufficed.
6 Hot Chocolate – You Sexy Thing *
Originally a No.2 hit in 1975, this track was remixed in Jan 87 when it madeNo.10, but after being featured in the biggest British film of all time,The Full Monty, it returns to the Top 10 in its original form.
Their only No.1 album was a greatest hits in 1987.
5 Hanson – I Will Come To You :O ===
Third single from the brothers Hanson. This is a slow track, and bloody awful.
3 All Saints – Never Ever *
Never mind the Spice Girls, it’ll soon be “Who’s your favourite All Saint?”as they beat their No.4 position in August of their debut single, “I KnowWhere It’s At”, with this ballad.
As for the favourite All Saint? I think it’s Mel. It’s the one with darkbrown hair, not the two blondes, and not Shaznay. For more of an idea whothe band look like, they’re like Eternal, but in reverse.
January sees them release a third single, “Under The Bridge”. I hope it’snot a cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers classic.
1 (1) Aqua – Barbie Girl *4th Week at No.1*
First ever hit, and this week knocking the Spice Girls off their perch aftera week, for this weird band with a black-haired girl as ‘Barbie’, thepopular young girls doll, singing an endless chanting chorus of :
Yes, it’s catchy, but so is impetigo.

In this week’s Top 10 there is a new entrs for The Lightning Seeds (Like YouDo – The Best Of, 5), while the Top 3 remains the same at Spice Girls, Verveand Eternal.
Elsewhere in the Top 40 there are new entries for Black Grape (Stupid StupidStupid, 11), Barbara Streisand (Higher Ground, 12), Sting/Police (Very BestOf, 14), Michael Bolton (All That Matters, 20), Sinead O’Connor (So Far.. TheBest Of, 28), and Kenny Rogers (Love Songs, 31).
47. Supergrass – Going Out
After a bit of a hit-and-miss situation with the singles, Caught By The Fuzz(No.43, Oct 94), Mansize Rooster (No.20, Feb 95), Lose It (No.75, Mar 95),things came to the fore with Lenny (No.10, May 95), and Alright (No.2, Jul 95),but then it was months until March 96 when “Going Out” made No.5.
I couldn’t stand Alright as it was played non-stop, but this one was neverplayed enough, and I still remember it being featured in an episode of thesitcom, Game On, as one of the characters has agrophobia, a fear of open spaces.
Since then, it was another long time until they came back with three bighits this year: Richard III, Sun Hits The Sky, and Late in the Day.
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
