    CHART TIME !

  • (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

11 new entries this week, 2 climbers (Lutricia McNeal from 24 to 22, andSteps from 16 to 15), 1 non-mover (Lighthouse Family at 7), and 26 going down.

Big fallers include Queen (from 13 to 28), Bernard Butler (from 12 to 29),and Rialto (from 20 to 34).

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    16 Peter Andre & Warren G – All Night All Right :O ===

What is it with Peter Andre? He thinks that he can revive a flagging careerby teaming up with so-called rap stars to have them guest-ramble over hissongs in the middle, and that it’ll boost his credibility.

It doesn’t. It just makes him look more of a ponce than usual.

    12 (10) Natalie Imbruglia – Torn *

One of last year’s biggest hits was promoted by her record company as beingespecially written for her… well it wasn’t. It was a No.1 hit in Norway forone of that country’s top artists. Although I can’t remember the name of theartist, it was sung a little slower and by a woman with a deeper voice.

Perhaps that one will be released over here now too.

    5 Ian Brown – My Star *

First single from the ex-Stone Roses lead singer, proving in addition to theSeahorses that there is plenty of life after the Stone Roses.

As a result, it’s a catchy, memorable tune that deserves plenty of airplay.

    4 Radiohead – No Surprises * !!!

Third single from their “OK Computer” album, and just a place short of thepeak of its first, “Paranoid Android”.

With the same pace of “Karma Police”, this ballad also has the minimum contentrequired in their promo videos. The first didn’t require anything – they justused a completely unrelated “Robin” cartoon, the series itself getting regularscreenings on the Paramount Channel in the UK. The second was a car drivingafter a man, almost running him down, but before he manages this the man turnson the car, sees the petrol leaking and sets fire to it. Man 1, Car 0.

All I’ve seen of the “No Surprises” promo is lead singer Thom Yorke‘s faceinside what looks like a space helmet with water pouring in so that the levelrises almost drowning him, while the lyrics rise up the screen looking faintand in reverse. That’s as far as the Chart Show got anyway.

    2 (1) All Saints – Never Ever *

And so down to No.2 after one week at the top, but it was enough to furthertheir career already.

I’d have thought that with the continued success of this single that they’dhave delayed their release of the cover version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers“Under The Bridge”, due out this week. I wish they’d delay it indefinitelyas the cover stinks.

1 (NEW) Oasis – All Around The World *1st Week at No.1*

Third single from “Be Here Now”, with a video that is a direct rip-off ofthe Beatles “Yellow Submarine” film.

As for the song, it’s catchy but very dull, and Liam’s interpretation of theword “shine” as “she-ine” really grates! Bleah!

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    4. Dubstar – No More Talk

Their first single last year was an absolute stroke of genius, withperfectly-engineered vocals in the soundmix culminating in an excellentchorus, and sung by the gorgeous Sarah Blackwood with the even more gorgeousNewcastle accent (and if either her or Jayne Middlemiss want my personal phonenumber I’ll gladly give it out 🙂

Alas their second release of last year, “Cathedral Park”, released in September, became one of those unfortunates like the Lightning Seeds’ “Say What You Say”,which enters the chart at No.41 and never goes up 🙁

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
