Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…This week sees a total of SEVEN new entries in the Top 10 alone, which isthe most there ever have been in the top lot. Whatever next, Cher at No.1 forthe fifth week in a row? Oh, er… DOH!

    17 2 Pac – Happy Home

The late 2 Pac (aka Tupac Shakur) releases another single from beyond thegrave. Happy home? Well, you don’t get many problems when you’ve six feetunder do you?

16 Clock – Blame It On The Boogie :O ===

Another track from Clock, another reason to buy a sick bucket. What is itwith this band? Take a disco classic, or a disco not-so-classic in someinstances, coat it in shit and stick it on a 5″ circular disc.

However, we should not only spare a thought for the poor unfortunate soulswho created this record, but for those who have bought it too!

    6 The Corrs – So Young (K-Klass remix) :O ===

I used to have great respect for this once-fine band, but they’ve gone downthe Everything But The Girl route of turning every great song they’ve madeinto a shitty remix.

I used to think that there wasn’t a normal cover version of “Dreams”, buthaving heard it on a trailer for BBC1’s “Ballykissmyarse”, there is one. Now, if I could buy that on a CD with the rest of the tracks in their originalformat it would be worth buying, but it would seem there’s three options :

  • (A) The original release, sans “Dreams”
  • (B) The re-release with a remix of “Dreams”
  • (C) The new “Special Edition” without proper versions of most songs, replacing them with remixes.

They’ve just sold out! I can only hope that they’re buttering up the UKmarket for their next album so that they can return with proper music onceagain and still be as successful.

    5 (2) Steps – Heartbeat / Tragedy

I heard a song on the radio and thought it was rather good. Then I found outit was “Heartbeat” by Steps !! Nurse, the screens !!!

    1 (1) Cher – Believe :O === *5th Week at No.1*

Cher goes Techno. The end result sounds like she’s singing through a toiletas a machine controls the inflection in her voice and makes her sound likeProfessor Stephen Hawking.

This is the fifteenth single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98
  • 3. Billie – Because We Want To
  • 4. Another Level – Freak Me
  • 5. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground
  • 6. Spice Girls – Viva Forever
  • 7. Boyzone – No Matter What
  • 8. Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
  • 9. All Saints – Bootie Call
  • 10. Robbie Williams – Millenium
  • 11. Melanie B featuring Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott – I Want You Back
  • 12. B*witched – Rollercoaster
  • 13. Billie – Girlfriend
  • 14. Spacedust – Gym And Tonic
  • 15. Cher – Believe

Fourteen No.1’s in a row beats the record set in the chart at week endingApril 13th 1996 when the Prodigy rounded off 10 singles going in at No.1 in arow which began with Shaggy. Let’s see how many more are to follow…

    48. Texas – Black Eyed Boy

After their debut in 1989, Sharleen Spiteri and the band didn’t get muchairplay until last year, despite some damn good tracks.

Say What You Want (No.7, Jan 97) was the first new single from Texas in threeyears, and certainly the first since my charts began, and it won the vote formost-hyped-single-of-the-week-by-a-Radio-1-DJ.

Love him or hate him, Chris Evans continues to profess about his love forthe lead singer, Sharleen, and even on his Radio 1 breakfast show he said thathis girlfriend, TFI Friday co-producer Suzi Aplin, would allow him to leaveher for another woman on the proviso that it’s Sharleen and Sharleen alone.

Texas performed this song twice on TFI Friday with a short space of time, something I don’t think has happened before, and at the time received thebiggest hyping when he continually told listeners to go out and buy thissingle only, including getting the co-presenters (definitely a case of ‘jobsa good un’ the wages they’re on) to each go out and buy a copy and bring backtheir receipt to prove this wasn’t another freebie for them.

That day they spent around 20 minutes talking about it with the members of thecrew each detailing the shop where they bought it (plenty of product placementthere including which shops were selling the limited CD single half as cheapthan a shop nearby, as if competition between shops was a new thing).

At the time Chris was on an hourly wage of UKP 2,700 so I doubt he gave a shit. Now he owns Virgin Radio, I doubt he cares that much.

The second single from their “White on Blonde” album was “Halo” (No.10, Apr 97)and another Top 10 hit for Texas, but the best single was “Black Eyed Boy”(No.5, Aug 97) and thankfully, the run of singles from this band isn’t a caseof “one good one, and a lot of average stuff” that a lot of bands turn out,but a series of first class tunes.

The fourth single, “Put Your Arms Around Me” (No.10, Nov 97), and at the timeChris Evans had split from Suzi Aplin, making me wonder how long before Chrisand lead singer Sharleen Spiteri become the next showbiz couple…?

Sadly, when their fifth release hit the charts, “Say What You Want/Insane”,while “Insane” was brilliant, the first track was a remake with the Wu TangClan. Now, what on earth were Texas playing at when they decided with have themruin a good song?

They made three videos for this “remix” and didn’t like any of them so thepromo used is that of their appearance on the Brits when Wu Tang’s Method Manappeared alongside Sharleen doing typical Bitty McLean-type rubbish by spoutinggobshite inbetween and over the original words of the song.

    It made my blood boil.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
