    CHART TIME !

    (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

15 new entries this week, no climbers, and three non-movers (Gala at 5,Chumbawamba at 2, and Will Smith at 1).

Big fallers include OTT (11 to 21), and Suede (9 to 35).

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

39 Soul II Soul – Represent

Soul II Soul haven’t had a new song in the charts for a while, and this newone makes a disappointing appearance on its first week out. Then again, it’s hadno airplay on any station I’ve listened to.

31 Beloved – The Rising Sun

Erm..is this a remix or a new song? I’ve not heard it, but the title sounds likeit’s suspiciously close to their 1989 No.26 debut single, “The Sun Rising” whichbrought them to the fore.

    14 UB40 – Tell Me Is It True * !!!

The main song from the action sequel “Speed 2: Cruise Control”, and not onlyis it a damn good gentle reggae tune, but the band also have a part in thefilm itself as Sandra Bullock, and new beau Jason Patric (who replaced KeanuReeves as he went off to play with his crap band Dogstar, and star in evencrappier films like Chain Reaction and Johnny Mnemonic), where they provide theon-boat entertainment in the evening performing this song, as well as theircover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”, recorded by the band in 1993for the Sharon Stone flop film, “Sliver”.

So, is “Speed 2” worth going to see? The answer is most definitely yes. Don’tlisten to all the newspapers who all had something against it, if you liked thefirst film, this one still has the pace, as well as more action before andafter the main boat sequence, in similar fashion to the first film. Willem Dafoeisn’t quite as evil an enemy as Dennis Hopper, but then who could be afterHopper’s performance in “Blue Velvet”.

    12 Connor Reeves – My Father’s Son *

First hit ever in the charts for singer-songwriter Connor Reeves, who haswritten some big hits previously apparently, but I can’t remember those hewrote 🙂

    1 (1) Will Smith – Men In Black *3rd Week at No.1*

Title track from the new Barry Sonnenfeld (Addams Family 1 and 2, Get Shorty)film, and what an excellent film it is. I saw it last week and expected not toomuch, but it’s one of the few films that actually offers more than what yousee in the trailer.

I didn’t much care for Smith’s performance in “Independence Day” as I wasn’tready for him turning that film into a comedy. He works very well in thissci-fi/comedy though, along with an excellent (as always) performance fromTommy Lee Jones, plus support from Linda Fiorentino (The Last Seduction),Vincent D’Onofrio (Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket) playing the bad guy,and Rip Torn as Agent Z.

As for this song, I’ll pass. It’s a standard rap affair which doesn’t havehalf the impact that “Boom! Shake the Room” had, and wouldn’t have done as wellhad it not been attached to a film.

Top 40 ALBUM chart analysis :

Just one new entry in the Top 10 for Oasis unsurprisingly going straight inat No.1 with “Be Here Now”, deposing Texas from the top slot. Some prat on a local radio station asked if there’s anyone at all who HASN’Tbought the album yet.. Well I haven’t, and I’m not planning to either, so there.

Elsewhere some of the Top 10 shuffles about a bit but nothing revolutionary.

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1997

    35. Queen – You Don’t Fool Me (The Remixes)

Queen’s long-awaited “Heaven For Everyone” album spawned the title trackand “A Winter’s Tale” as singles before the end of 95, but of the singlesreleased in 1996, this one was far and away the best, as the other two,“Let Me Live”, and a new, crappy version of “Too Much Love Will Kill You”which I never liked in any form before.

“You Don’t Fool Me (remix)” made No.17 at the end of November 96.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
