    CHART TIME !

  • (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

12 new entries this week, 2 climbers (Robbie Williams from 9 to 7, andLighthouse Family from 7 to 4), 2 non-movers (Janet Jackson at 8, andAll Saints at 2), and 24 going down.

Big fallers include Ian Brown (5 to 16), Radiohead (4 to 22), Goldie(13 to 33), and Kaleef (26 to 38).

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

11 Green Day – Time of Your Life (Good Riddance) *

Although last in the chart in October 1997 at No.25 with “Hitchin’ A Ride”,their biggest hit to date remains the frantic “Basket Case” which made No.7in January 1995.

By complete contrast, this latest hit is a slow, acoustic-guitar effortand rather good indeed.

    10 Chumbawamba – Amnesia :O ===

In 1993, Chumbawamba just missed the chart in a collaboration with Credit ToThe Nation for the gay anthem, “Enough is Enough”, which wasn’t a bad record.

What was a bad record though was “Tubthumping”, which made No.2 late last year, which I liked at first, but really grew tired of it as it was played to deathon the radio. This latest effort is more of the same, and just as inane.

    3 Catatonia – Mulder and Scully * !!!

Surprisingly this is only Catatonia‘s third Top 40 hit, the others beingthe superb “You’ve Got A Lot To Answer For” (No.35, Sept 96) and “I Am The Mob”(No.40, Oct 97).

This song, apart from being excellent, has nothing to do with The X-Files,but instead lends part of the lyric to comparing something weird with thesort of thing that (Fox) Mulder and (Dana) Scully would investigate.

    1 (NEW) Usher – You Make Me Wanna… *1st Week at No.1*

As Oasis fall to No.5, a newcomer to the charts makes his debut at the topslot. Not a bad soul song either.

    5. Eels – Susan’s House

This was the second single released last year for this American band and wasquite a weird record which is partly spoken, and when I first heard it I wassure it was Sting, but it’s not. “Susan’s House” made No.9 in May.

Their other singles were “Novacaine For The Soul” (No.10, Feb) and“Your Lucky Day In Hell” (No.35, Sept).

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
