Murderbot opens on the Mining Station Aratake, in which the self-titled, titular robot (voiced by Alexander Skarsgård – Lee) is built to protect humans, and look after them, even though he thinks most of them are arseholes, noted from the time when we see one of them trying to burn his hand.
Meanwhile, he’s been trying to hack his own settings, and take control of his own unit. Once done, he could kill everyone and take off on his own… if he wanted to, but first things first, and he doesn’t want to break free just yet. He’s going to bide his time, and watch sci-fi soap operas.
Yes, it sounds like someone’s done a very long line of cocaine, taken a reasonable premise and flushed it down the “Stupid” toilet.
Murderbot did have some promise, but there’s far too much time spent with narration about himself, and how he spends his day trying to work out whether or not he hates humans, and then takes an ill-advised turn as he shows his actual face to one of the ship’s crew, and then he no longer comes across as a robot, so the whole point of him just stops working at that point.
Maybe this works for some people, but I’m not really getting where this is going.
Murderbot is on Apple TV+ from tomorrow, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
Initially, two episodes are available, and additional episodes will stream weekly.
Thanks to our friends at Apple TV+ for the screener prior to release.
