How does the controller of BBC1 sleep at night when such trash masquerades in the form of entertainment?
Cases in point:
Doctors and Nurses – starring Adrian Edmondson and co-written by Phil Hammond, so off to a good start.Alas, all Mina Anwar did was swap the police uniform of The Thin Blue Line (also BBC comedy at its most dire)for that of a nurse, and participated in a dreadful sketch that centred aroundseeing which male patient had the biggest penis. How many decades old was thescript?
David Mitchell from C4’s excellent Peep Show (which was robbed by not getting a mention at the ComedyAwards) was wasted with no jokes other than seeming to have Parkinson’s disease when he tried to use a syringe, and while Ade had no comedy lines, the only one left was the overacting buffoon from a coffee ad who scoffed atbeing thought that he worked for Happy Shopper and not Sainsbury’s.
Then came Revolver. Things got even worse.
I watched about five sketches before giving up completely. The first ‘gag’ was a rip-off of the Alas Smith and Jones tattoo sketch, but instead of’pollocks’ it was a builder retiring, saying he wanted a tattoo of a ‘brick’ on his back.
Now despite the fact that the entire audience had got the point that the tattooist (Alec Bradley) obviouslythought ‘prick’, going from his pained expression, he then labours the point, by mouthing ‘brick’ about 10 timesat the camera, in the same way that occured in an episode of Will & Grace where “Xbox” was thought to mean awoman’s privates – until said character saw the item and said something like “Oh, an Xbox is a games console!”.
The next one-series failure for the BBC starts this Friday – Mad About Alice in which three actors withfailed careers – Jamie Theakston (actor?), Amanda Holden (see Greasemania – or rather don’t!) andJohn Gordon-Sinclair (who hasn’t been funny since the first Gregory’s Girl) star in a sitcom that featurea separated couple who still have to keep in touch because they have a son. Cue all manner of staged situations, tired routines and canned laughter.
So what comedy is good? BBC3 actually have a winner in Nighty Night with Julia Davis (who also wrote it),Kevin Eldon, Angus Deayton, Rebecca Front and other well-known names and faces for fans of Alan Partridge,Chris Morris shows and KYTV.
It has sharp writing, perfect comic timing and awkward situations done so well that it shows how finely honed thescript was. And there’s NO CANNED LAUGHTER!
Lorraine Heggessey – how can you continue to waste money on pointless ‘red’ idents when you should be spending iton people who can actually write for your station?
