news page picJanuary 31st:Will Yellowcard be shown the red card on CD…?

“A cacophony of American OTT unforgettable rock-riffs” is howDVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Robertsrefers to this album from the band Yellowcard, but is easily understandablewhen he likens them to Green Day, who I think are one of the world’s greatestexamples of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Are there any redeeming features onthe album?

The new music charts will be online soon…. promise.

news page picBubble, by Steven Soderbergh – a new film with a unique distribution method…

Director Steven Soderbergh‘s latest movie, Bubble, is a filmabout the residents of a small town in Ohio who puzzle out the details of amurder which took place at the local toy factory. It stars no professionalactors, but while that’s a rarity, it’s not what sets this release apart fromany other.

Yes, the difference is in how it’s being distributed. Normally, films arereleased in the cinema first and then to DVD approximately six months later, although even that’s been shortened drastically in the last couple of yearsas the UK DVD release ofThe Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxywas a mere four months after its outing on the big screen, and the US DVDof Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty, cut that down to just three months.

So, how long will fans of Bubble have to wait? No time at all. Well, technically 4 days but that’s because it’s out in the cinema in the US thisFriday, January 27th, and then it hits the stores on DVD next Tuesday, butviewers of the high-definition pay-TV network, HDNet, will see it from thisFriday too.

Of course, cinemas are up in arms about this because movie goers won’t haveto travel to their place of business and spend of a small fortune on salty, overpriced popcorn. They can just pay around $25 (approx £13) for aDVD to keep at home and watch as many times as they like. And with a pedigreelike Soderbergh’s, director of sex lies and videotape, Erin Brockovich,The Limey and the Ocean’s Eleven/Twelve movies, this could be manytimes indeed.

So, is this the future of all films? It’d certainly help to kill off the piracymarket if consumers could buy a top-quality release on near-enough day onewithout having to trudge down to a car boot sale for a CDR of a poor-qualityversion or download the same tripe for nothing, and if it’s a film worthhaving them some are worth shelling out for when offered at the right pricelike this one or when you get a nice boxset as they can look as good as thosethey used to do for laserdiscs. Even the price of the boxsets are coming downwhen sales come round. Around Xmas I bought the 12-disc extended Lord of the Ringstrilogy boxset for about £27 from Amazon!

And the take-off in legally download mp3 tracks could lead the way forward forlegal downloads of films as broadband connections get ever faster. As an aside, given the way society’s much more of a “now” society today, I can’t remember thelast time anything was advertised as saying to “allow 28 days for delivery” 🙂

news page picITV’s pointless rebranding for 2006…

It’s only been 3 years since ITV last rebranded themselves with stupidyellow and blue squares, but now they’re wasting money on doing it againwith new channel ID logos (because clearly their own marketing dept aretoo thick to realise what channel they’re watching) and new idents, including – for the main channel – a middle-aged man almost losing his towel, pigs wallowing in manure and a dog hanging out of a car window.

Presumably it’ll be the only of the four ITV channels to escape a permanentlogo as the others already carry them. Either way, ITV4 has been branded inthe new way since it started in November, and the only time I’ve tuned in isto watch old repeats of the excellent Dream On. However, I’d have watchedDream On whichever channel it was on, so it doesn’t matter that it’son ITV4, which is where the TV execs fall down: People watch PROGRAMMESnot channels.

ITV’s marketing dept have also discovered by spending money is that theywant people to think of the main ITV channel as ‘Robbie Williams’, with 2, 3and 4 as ‘Cameron Diaz’, ‘Shiela Hancock’ and ‘Daniel Craig’, the new JamesBond. Pardon?

They’ve also ascertained that a survey of 6,000 people think that ITV’s imageis ‘vague’ and that they think the BBC is ‘Dad’, whereas C4 is ‘cool brother’.

Fuck knows what they’re smoking, but the cost of this is £3million,which is surely better spent on making programmes than the reality shit thatspews forth on a daily basis(!)
