news page picThe Beatles Commemorative Plaque Project in Wales…

DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Robertsis undertaking a project which he hopes will result in the siting of a plaque to register the fact thatThe Beatles played a concert in Mold, Flintshire north Wales. This was roughly 12 months before theybecame a world phenomenon. He continues…

Beatles authors and historians Ray O’Brien (Liverpool), Harry Thomas (Prestatyn) and I, are proposing thata commemorative plaque be placed on the Lloyds/TSB Bank (formerly the Assembly Hall) in Mold, to regitserthat they played there on Thursday 24 January 1963.

The group had just had chart success with their first single Love Me Do,and Mold Town Council booked and paid their £50 fee.The after, BrianEpstein signed a contract with Vee Jay Records, who were going to handle theirUS singles releases.

On Sunday 3rd April, at Central Station venue in Wrexham, I met with MikePeters of The Alarm(see review),to discuss his letter of support for the project. Mike is a massive Beatles fan,so he is more than pleased to help this project. Other letters or quotes havebeen kindly submitted by David Hanson MP for Delyn (Mold), Sandy Mewies AM forsame area, Ian Lucas MP (Wrexham), plaque designer Tony Booth, Tourism PartnershipNorth Wales, the above authors and eye-witnesses.

I hope to convince the relevant authorities, in particular the ConservationDept at Flintshire County Council, and the building’s landlord W.Black in Surrey,of its popular cultural significance and worthiness.

I am also discussing the possibility of sponsorship with various parties. The (bi-lingual) plaque siting could be included in information packs used atthe annual Beatles Convention/Concerts in Liverpool.

I have contacted the Welsh Tourist Board about the possibility of having theMold venue included in a brochure, which if successful, would include other venuesThe Beatles played at in Prestatyn, Rhyl, Llandudno ,Abergavenny and Cardiff.

Eventually I would like to take the project throughout Wales, placing plaqueson all the venues.

There could be potential commercial spin-offs for all towns/cities etc.Press, television and radio could be invited to participate.

I would like people who attended the shows in ABERGAVENNY on SATURDAY 22 June1963 (Ballroom,Town Hall, Cross St.) and their three shows in Cardiff on,MONDAY 27 MAY 1963 (Capitol Cinema), SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 1964 (Odeon Cinema)and SUNDAY 12 DECEMBER 1965 (Capitol Cinema) to come forward to retell theirexperiences of the nights, possibly supplying artefacts/memorobilia, such astickets, programmes, photographs and autographs.

So far, I’ve had an overwhelming response from people who attended the show inMold.

If any members of the press, radio or television were present at any of theabove shows, I would like to hear from them too.

I am prepared to hold telephone interviews, or receive emails of their accounts.I can be contacted on 07765 862017 or emailelly2000@freenet.co.uk

news page picRED DOT: The campaign has a success…

Following on from the article below, published last Monday, has anyone yethad this kick in on their digibox? I have a silver Panasonic Sky box andit hasn’t yet downloaded the software update.

The article was as follows:

“And I put this down to every single person who’s ever campaigned against this’press red’ nonsense, since from today, Sky digital boxes will have softwaredownloaded to them over the next few days to make the red-dot interactivelogo disappear after 30 seconds of changing channel.

After that point, the ‘press red-then-backup’ to remove it completely untilyou change channel will hopefully still be possible.

And all this time, you can still press red to access the content, which meansthat the constant presence of the logo does not need to be in place.

Let’s hope this is the first step to all logos being made an option, so thoseof us who aren’t thick enough to not know what channel we’re watchingcan switch off this irritation for good!”

Keep emailing the broadcasters tell them how you feel!

DVD highlights this week and forthcoming…

A few highlights coming up that are well worth splashing out your moolah on. For each one that’s of interest, click on the image for more info on Amazon:

Six Feet Under Season 3 (£49.99, Warner) is the first one up, and was the first series tobe shot in 16:9. The directors of previous seasons made a fantastic job of framing the 4:3 image perfectly, and there’s no stopping the perfect cinematography featured here too. If only Warner could be a bit morespeedy with the releases as Season 4 has long since been shown on E4 and Channel 4.

This ground-breaking series from Alan Ball, the Academy-award winning writer of American Beauty, takes adarkly comic look at life and death from the perspective of a dysfunctional family that runs an independentfuneral home in California. This release features all the epsidoes from Season Three.

Episode titles: Perfect Circles, You Never Know, The Eye Inside, Nobody Sleeps, The Trap, Making Love Work,Timing and Space, Tears Bones and Desire, The Opening, Everyone Leaves, Death Works Overtime, Twilight,I’m Sorry I’m Lost.

One of my favourite ‘slightly scary’ films when I was young was the classic Roger Moore flick,The Man Who Haunted Himself (£15.99, VCI), as good goes against evil, despite them being thesame person… or are they? Probably.

After a near fatal car crash Arthur Pelham, is horrified to discover an exact double of him has taken overhis former life. The evil doppleganger steals his wife, his house, his job and sends him to the brink ofmadness while he tries to understand the weird forces now shaping his existence. What can the rationalexplanation be for all of this? Can Pelham learn the terrifying truth before losing his mind completely?

Extras include an audio commentary by Roger Moore and uncredited writer/producer Bryan Forbes, moderatedby journalist Jonathan Sothcott, stills gallery, storyboard gallery, trailer, publicity materials andcollectable original publicity booklet.

Apollo 13 Special Edition (£19.99, Universal), out next week, is a fantastic movie about the expeditionthat didn’t go to plan, starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton. For more info, readthe original DVD review.

The extras this time include an audio commentary with director Ron Howard, plus one with Jim & Marilyn Lovell, featurettes: “The Lost Moon: The Triumph of Apollo 13”, “Conquering Space: The Moon and Beyond”,”Lucky 13: The Astronauts’ Story”, so the only difference seems to be the addition of those featurettes asthe commentaries were present on the original DVD.

Returning for one last bit of release info for this week is a set of titles from Silver Vision, which aremany an hour of fighting. Click on the individual title for more info:

news page picRED DOT: The campaign has a success…

The RED DOT campaignis online now.
