Orgazmo, from the creators of the infamous South Park, was one of the first First Independent titles to be released via Columbia TriStar on DVD, in 2000, but had a paucity of extras compared to this new Blu-ray release.
Sex and religion are two of the most controversial topics for a film, so Matt Stone and Trey Parker obviously used this as their catalyst to begin with a couple of bible-bashing god-botherers turning up at the house where a porn movie is being filmed.
One of them runs off, but the other, Joe Young (Parker), kicks the collective asses of the bouncers guarding the house and is offered the part of Orgazmo, the film that becomes the biggest grossing film since E.T. and Star Wars, but since he wants to save himself for his love Lisa (Robyn Lynne), a stunt-cock is required.
His sidekick Choda Boy, aka Ben Chapelski (Dian Bachar), is a porn-star by day but an inventor by night and puts together a real-life Orgazmerator (I think that’s what it was called), which they use, at first, to disable the local heavies who beat up the owner of the sushi bar that the cast frequent and later to rescue Lisa.
And just to add to the family-orientated viewing medium, there are cameos aplenty from American hardcore porn stars such as Max Hardcore, Jeanna Fine, Serenity and Ron Jeremy, who, at the time of the DVD release, I thought looked like David Baddiel!
Note that this film is billed as the “extended version”, yet that just means it’s the uncut version classed as ‘unrated’, which is the same version that was released originally on DVD.
Presented in the original 1.85:1 widescreen ratio and in 1080p high definition, the picture’s a little soft, although that could be down more to the original filming than anything to do with the print. What is an issue with the print here, though, is that there’s a regular and recurring element of the ‘sticking’ problem as seen on the House On Haunted Hill Blu-ray, albeit to a much lesser degree.
Audio-wise, the sound is in Dolby Stereo (Dolby Digital 2.0). Music, dialogue and orgasm sounds are fine. There’s nothing to write home about in this dept, however.
The extras are as follows. Filmed at the time of shooting, they’re presented in 4:3:
- Behind The Scenes (17:50): Chat from the cast and crew mixed in with on-set filming and general goofing around. Oddly, some crew members get their faces blanked out from time to time, even some who are speaking!
- Outtakes (40:03): The most amount of outtakes I’ve ever seen on a Blu-ray or DVD!
- Cut scenes (28:13): A huge stack of deleted scenes.
- Cast and crew interviews (7:54): A handle of Q&As (questions posed on captions followed by answers from the participants) with Trey Parker, Matt Stone, actor Dian Bachar, co-producer Jason McHugh, actress Juli Ashton.
- The Book of Orgazmo (39:18): Interviews with Jason McHugh, plus Parker and Stone, looking at short films, trailers and early films made together. There’s interjections (f’nar, f’nar) from everyone else as well.
- Trey Parker at Dragon Con (33:54): A live link-up from Trey in New York to Dragon Con in Atlanta, Georgia. Naturally, live link-ups rarely go to plan – including making a connection in the first place – and there are quite a few moments of iffy audio quality here, but what you have is exactly as it happened, and I love it when such things are committed to DVD and Blu-ray because an event like this is something that happened once and will never happen again.
Trey makes an interesting point that the MPAA had a problem with the film & forced it to have an NC-17 certififcate because Choda Boy wears a plastic dildo on his head, but he countered with them that, “So it’s okay for a woman to be raped in ‘Se7en’ with a dildo containing razor blades(?)”
And just how hot is the unseen interviewer, Rachel? 😉
(And on a censorship point, it’s interesting that they zoomed in on the picture to avoid an inadvertent product placement shot of the drink Trey was sipping on, although I expect this was part of the original video and nothing Three Wolves have done)
If I had a complaint about them, it’s that none of them are chaptered, so since some of them (thankfully) go on for a fair while – and that there are natural breaks within – I’d like to see them broken up with chapters.
Menus are silent and static, and while Blu-ray menus are meant to flow between each one fluidly, these have been encoded like a DVD menu, making your player jerk between them. There are also no subtitles. On the plus side, though, the menu says there are 12 chapters, but Three Wolves redeem themselves slightly with an odd-numbered 17 across the film.
Orgazmo is out now on Blu-ray and DVD, and click on the packshot for the full-size version.
