“We’ll always be together…” And at last fans of a classic slice of 80s nostalgia can be reunited with their first love as Second Sight gives a first ever DVD release to Electric Dreams. This much-loved, bona fide 80s classic – as famous for its outstanding soundtrack and accompanying Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder theme tune as it is for a plot that was inspired by the growing fad for computer technology – arrives for the for the first time on 6 April 2009.

Electric Dreams is a prime slice of pop culture from the decade that refuses to die. Its fast-paced plot was, at the time, bang up to date with computer technology and this rom-com was further boosted by its soundtrack that featured a raft of 80s legends, taking in The Human League’s Oakey alongside synth soundtrack legend Giorgio Moroder and such luminaries as Heaven 17, Culture Club and Jeff Lynne of ELO. Its success was driven by that of the accompanying pop promo for the Electric Dreams single that featured clips from the film.

And that theme song is as popular today as ever – The Human League closed their recent sell-out tour of the UK with this paean to computer love.

For those that remember the theme tune but not the plot, Electric Dreams follows Miles, a helpless, hopeless architect about to blow a fuse. Having come up with earthquake proof technology, he buys a home computer in an effort to get organised and develop his ideas. The problem comes when Edgar – his problematic PC – decides to ruin his life, wrecking his credit rating, running up his phone bill, cancelling his plane reservations and locking him out of his house. Now Edgar wants his girlfriend; the blonde and brilliant Madeline, who’s just waiting for the sparks to fly.

With 80s nostalgia as strong as it ever was and Oakey and his cohorts in the Human League still playing to packed houses, this cherished and fondly remembered classic is a nostalgic trip back to a time when computers were new, fashion was dubious and music was fierce.
