Released by FremantleMedia Enterprises May 24th, British engineering enthusiast and well renowned TV icon Chris Barrie (Red Dwarf, The Brittas Empire) presents Britain’s Greatest Machines Series 1 for the first time on DVD. In this fantastic two – disc box set Chris Barrie celebrates 50 years of British design and innovation that have helped shape Britain and change people’s lives today.

All first four episodes of the series are included in Britain’s Greatest Machines Series 1 with Series 2 following in July 2010. Each episode focuses on the inventions of a different decade, packed with fascinating facts and intriguing stories bound to entertain and inform fans of all ages.

In 1930’s The Road to War Chris takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane and drives an A4 Gresley the world’s fastest steam locomotive and takes a flight in a Dragon Rapide, one of the first airliners. He also drives a Sentinel steam lorry and finds out how the Supermarine S6-B plane laid the groundwork for Britain’s war-winning Spitfire aircraft.

1950’s A New World Order sees Chris taking a Routemaster bus down to his local skidpan and firing up one of the most iconic military aircraft ever, the Vulcan bomber. Chris also visits the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank to find out how a peaceful post-war radio telescope became embroiled in the Cold War, before taking to the original “Jungle” Test Track in a Land Rover.

In 1960’s Revolution by Design Chris relives the glamour of the Monte Carlo rally at the wheel of a Mini Cooper and also investigates the secrets of one of Britain’s most iconic buildings, the Post Office Tower. Finally, in honour of the ultimate beauty pageant beloved by this decade, Chris organises his own Miss World competition – for beautiful Sixties sports cars!

In 1980’s The Future Has Landed Chris takes a ride in a “Back to the Future” DeLorean DMC and revisits the battles of the Falklands War and its unsung hero, the Scimitar tank. Chris also looks at some vehicles that were ahead of their time including the unforgettable Sinclair C-5.

From the world’s greatest steam locomotive to the might of some of the country’s most awe-inspiring military vehicles, Chris Barrie’s passion and engaging presentation makes Britain’s Greatest Machines Series 1 a great gift for machine fans of all ages.

The DVD is released on May 24th, it runs for 188 mins and is available for £19.99.
