The incredible story of National Geographic’s search for the subject of its most iconic image

Released by FremantleMedia Enterprises on 24th May, In Search of the Afghan Girl is the incredible story behind the subject of one of the most instantly recognizable, iconic photographs of all time.

In 1985, the haunting picture of an enigmatic Afghan refugee girl with startling sea-green eyes graced the cover of National Geographic Magazine and captivated the world. Years later, in 2002, Steve McCurry, the photographer who took this world-famous picture, returned to the Afghan-Pakistan border to try and track down his anonymous subject once again.

In Search of the Afghan Girl tells the amazing story of McCurry’s quest to find the nameless woman whose youthful image became a global symbol of wartime dignity, resilience, and survival. As McCurry follows rumours and clues to find his subject, he journeys deeper in to the teeming refugee camp, ultimately employing cutting edge eye-scanning and face-recognition technology used by the FBI to identify the woman they had met only fleetingly almost two decades earlier.

Search for the Afghan Girl has never been available to buy before and is an essential addition to the DVD collection of anyone passionate about adventure, photography or world affairs. This documentary provides a unique insight into everyday life in Afghanistan today, as well as telling the remarkable story of one woman and her family.

The DVD is released on May 24th, it runs for 52 mins and is available for £7.99.
