Hugh Williams (Wuthering Heights) is Sir Robert Chiltern, a prospective Cabinet minister who discovers that his career may be in jeopardy due to the surprising and unwelcomed appearance of adventuress Mrs. Cheveley (Paulette Goddard The Diary of a Chambermaid). She attempts to enlist Sir Roberts help in a shady Argentinean canal scheme. Her methods turn to blackmailing as Sir Robert indignantly refuses. Now the race is on for Sir Robert to come up with a solution to this dilemma as he cannot allow Mrs. Cheveley to reveal his secret past dealings
With a star-studded cast, costume designed by the legendary Cecil Beaton and shot in glorious Technicolor, this is the ultimate adaptation of one of Oscar Wildes most famous and best loved plays; one that is bound to please, amuse and entertain in equal measure.
