Director Ridley Scottwas on hand to pick up the people’s award forGladiatorrecently, which was voted the best video of 2000 in a nation-widepoll undertaken by the British Video Association (BVA) and the BritishAssociation of Record Dealers (BARD), sponsored by Nestle Quality Street.

Gladiator has already sold over 2,000,000 copies on VHS and DVD since itsrelease last November and continues to stride triumphantly from strength tostrength. The immortal words uttered by Russell Crowe, who played the death-defyingMaximus, “What we do in life echoes in eternity”, certainly nowrings true as this video marches on from success to success.

Voted on exclusively by the British public, these new awards were launchedby the BVA and BARD in October 2000. The aim of the awards was to raiseconsumer awareness of video and DVD, and to celebrate the phenomenal successof these formats in the UK.

Head of Retail Marketing (Films and Kids), Darren Linton observed: “We aretruly astounded by the achievement of this movie. It had done excellentlyat the box office and we are delighted that the people have made sure thatit has also become one of the most popular videos in the home too.”

Gladiator took the prize in the Best Film category beatingChicken Run (Pathe) American Beauty (DreamWorks) andThe World Is Not Enough (MGM).
