Prime Target starts off in a way, with a camera circling around, making me think something terrible was about to happen… but I’ll leave that outcome for you to view.
Edward Brooks (Leo Woodall – One Day) is a nerd with a thing for prime numbers, but conversely hopeless with women. He’s very socially awkward and keeps wanting to write down long, drawn-out calculations as if his life depends on it.
Cue creepy people watching others on hidden CCTV, people sending encrypted messages through the interne – but all in large, bold type, so we can read it, too. Meanwhile, Ed sudddenly finds someone’s been in his University dorm and nicked a load of things, then goes elsewhere looking in books and all sorts of places for answer, getting nowhere and then tapping fervently on the table.
Elsewhere, he starts crying to his lecturer, Robert Mallinder (David Morrissey – Daddy Issues), about how the universe is full of self-imposed non-prime numbers, like 24 hours in a day… erm… even though that’s based on how the Earth revolves around the Sun, and not something we have control over. Meanwhile, he tries to draw a parallel with things that have prime number bases, such as the number of chambers in an apple (five). No wonder Robert tells him this is all ‘tin foil hat’-style theory.
Borgen‘s Sidse Babett Knudsen also appears as Mallinder’s better half, Professor Andrea Lavin.
Episode 2 brings more pieces of the puzzle into play, mainly in the form of co-lead Quintessa Swindell (Black Adam) as Taylah Sanders, but Prime Target just feels like a tired piece of clichéd nonsense which we’ve seen so many times before.
Prime Target is on Apple TV+ from today. Initially, two episodes are available, and additional episodes will stream at the rate of two per week.
It isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
