Prince Andrew: The Musical – The DVDfever Review – Channel 4 – Kieran Hodgson

Prince Andrew: The Musical Prince Andrew: The Musical… Can’t say I’m too big a fan of most musicals*, but then no-one sane is a fan of Prince Andrew, a paedophile whose late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, used £12m of public funds to bail him out of a court case.

(*Exceptions to The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Blues Brothers)

Public perception of him couldn’t sink any lower, not even that of Jeremy Clarkson.

There’s a spoof version of the interview between him and former Newsnight presenter, Emily Maitlis (played by Emma Sidi), even including clips of the original interview, where he talked out of his arse about Jeffrey Epstein, saying how there was a photo taken of him at Ghislane Maxwell’s house, despite “never having gone upstairs“.

This Prince Andrew (Kieran Hodgson) sings about “I nailed it“, yet justifying why he mentioned sweat and Pizza Hut, whilst ‘Emily’ also sings about how “I nailed it” because she took him down.

Add in lyrics like “A new hero has risen, who won’t go to prison”, and the songs take us on a tour of the ’80s, including how he found Fergie and married her. Shame she was about 30 years too old for him…

Even if you didn’t know it was a spoof, the actors don’t particularly look like the people they’re playing. The then-Prince Charles is played by Munya Chawawa (Complaints Welcome), born in Zimbabwe, when the real Charles wasn’t, but then the best thing about Channel 5’s Anne Boleyn drama was Jodie Turner-Smith.

As for who plays Margaret Thatcher? Drag queen Baga Chipz. Well, Ms Chipz must be a step-up from the real one.

Overall, Prince Andrew: The Musical is worth a look, but it’s far from brilliant, and I question how many people will actually make it through the full hour.

Prince Andrew: The Musical airs on Channel 4 on Thursday December 29th at 9pm, after which it will be on All 4. It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
