Queen of Hearts

A woman jeopardizes both her career and her family when she seduces her teenage stepson and is forced to make an irreversible decision with fatal consequences.

Anne, a successful lawyer, lives in a beautiful modernist home with her two daughters and physician husband, Peter. Yet when Gustav, Peter’s troubled teenage son from another relationship, comes to live with them, she forms an intimate bond with him that jeopardises her perfect life. And what initially seems like a liberating move for her soon turns into a disturbing story of power, betrayal, and responsibility with devastating consequences.

Director: May el-Toukhy
Writers: Maren Louise Käehne, May el-Toukhy
Stars: Trine Dyrholm, Gustav Lindh, Magnus Krepper

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

IT Chapter 2 follows on 27 years after 2017’s IT, and the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back…

New to the cast, Jessica Chastain has said there’s more blood in this than any other film that’s gone before. I doubt that, but we’ll see.

Personally, I thought IT was a bit on the crap side, and yet another of those horror movies which relied a lot on jump-scares. I’ve not seen the Tim Curry version made for TV, and I really should do, but since I’ll most likely watch this to see how things turn out, I want to go into it without knowing anything about the story beforehand.

However, I’m not in a rush to see this in the cinema. Why? Well, the first one was overlong at 2hrs 15mins, and this sequel is almost THREE HOURS LONG! It’s 169 minutes, which is ridiculous.

Director: Andy Muschietti
Screenplay: Gary Dauberman
Novel: Stephen King
Also stars: James McAvoy, Javier Botet, Bill Skarsgård, Bill Hader, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Martell, Troy James, Jay Ryan, Jackson Robert Scott, Xavier Dolan

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

K-12 is (it says here) an eerily enchanting musical film, written and directed by Melanie Martinez, where she plays Cry Baby, a strong and sensitive girl, is sent off to a disturbing sleepaway school that’s hidden underneath a grandiose façade. Luckily, she has a sweet and unapologetic best friend who sticks up for her when she gets bullied by the other students whose brains are under control by the Principal and his wicked staff. With the help of the magical friends they meet along the way, as well as an Angelic Spirit Guide, they are able to gain the strength they need to fight off the school’s belligerent patriarchal conditioning.

Watching the trailer, this is weird, spooky, and WTF is going on?! It looks fantastic!

And yes, I highlighted this film last week, but then it got bumped to this week.

Also stars: Emma Harvey, Zión Moreno, Megan Gage, Zinnett Hendrix, Jesy McKinney, Marsalis Steven Wilson, Maggie Budzyna
