Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver… yes, we’ve endured part one, so it’s only right we must also suffer the other half, for completeness.
Naturally, this review will mention elmements of Rebel Moon Part One: A Child Of Fire, so make sure you’ve seen that first before reading this.
This time round, Kora (Sofia Boutella) and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) and now an item, Tarak (Staz Nair) is joining them in battle, and we learned towards the end of the first film how Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) deemed Kora the ‘Scargiver’ because… she gave him a scar. Yep, great writing, huh?
She also bumped him off last time, so who would take his place in Part 2? Erm… Noble.
Yes, he’s back as Captain, and still being a complete dick, murdering people who are just doing their job, the man in question having been tasked with just checking he was fit for work, and had to undergo a few tests to make sure. Noble just blows his brains out! How’s he going to explain that to the man’s family?!
And why the hell did they bring him back? It’s like bringing back Hitler!
Just even more ridiculously stupid writing.
In Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, they all spend forever doing nothing, staying home and having tea dances, while Djimon sits down and starts singing about gold, or something… until they remember they have to fill time with a battle.
However, the slo-mo action scenes are so tedious, and also so bloody santised. We could’ve had some glorious gory violence in both halves of this film, but no, Zack Snyder had to tone it down to 12-certificate levels.
Apparently, a more adult version of all this is coming, but I can’t sit through this shite a second time. I can imagine how most scenes could’ve benefitted from more gore, and I’m not going to waste another 4.5 hours on it. Get it right first time!
I also learned that Netflix insisted on these child-friendly versions. If that’s the case, then that’s crazy. No-one wants that, and the effect on what we are left with is just terrible. It could’ve been so much better.
This second film even teases a sequel. No, thanks. It took me three attempts to get through it, as it was making me doze off! Give us Justice League Part 2! That’s what we all want!
Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver is on Netflix now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
