Dom Robinson reviews
Kiseki
Rei Rei / The Gigolois one of the first Anime titles to be released by Kiseki via Revelation forthe UK DVD market and contains two episodes of the former, totalling 55 minutes, plus The Gigolo, a 45-minute adventure for the cartoon beefcake.
Dead Girls Can’t Talk is the first tale about Rei Rei: The SensualEvangelist, which brings us into the realms of Manga’s answer to Dr. HaroldShipman as no-one here gets out alive. Where Dr. Manami differs though is thatshe has seduced and corrupted innocent schoolgirl Ikuko before bumping her offand the little dead girl can only be helped by Goddess of Love, Kaguya andIkuko’s boyfriend.
In The Lover’s Guide, Satoshi is getting nowhere with Mika as he’sscared of women and needs a good teacher in the form of Kaguya, the Prophetessof Passion, before going back to Mika and introducing her to the big “O”(er.. not Roy Orbison).
The Gigolo has muscles, huge muscles. Muscles that would only existin a Mr. Universe contest in fact. He’s 22 and is enticed into winning a sportscar as long as he can help Ai Mizushima to “make me scream with pleasure”,although it sounds like she has no trouble with that every time she says herfirst name (“Aiyeee”). There’s also a plot, in which people get shotand I’m a poet but I don’t know it.
There’s no visible artifacts and things look as good as they should, butthe Japanese style of animation on display here is reminiscent of Battleof the Planets, but with added sex. Presented in a 4:3 fullscreenratio, the average bitrate is a fine 5.54Mb/s.
The sound is pretty sparse containing dialogue in the respective language, twee music and bizarre special effects sounds that seem to have come from theaforementioned cartoon.
Extras : Chapters :There’s 4 chapters covering both episodes of Rei Rei at the rate of2 apiece and another 4 for The Gigolo. Languages & Subtitles :Rei Rei contains Japanese dialogue and burnt-in English subtitleswhich occasionally obscure the ‘action’, while The Gigolo is dubbedinto English with no subtitles available. Menu :The menu is static and silent only offering you the chance to start eitherprogramme or select a chapter.
Overall, it’s good to see that we have a double feature here, but the wholething makes for rather disappointing viewing. The plots are hardly complexand any sex scenes, which we’re presumably meant to watch this for, areshort-lived and seem to have been cropped to avoid seeing too much (so as toappease theBBFCpresumably). Oh, apparently the Japanese don’t like seeing pubic hair sothere’s none of that for the characters to floss their teeth with.
