THE AMAZING SPIDER-MANIt looks like director Sam Raimi has decided on who to cast as thesequel’s villain, Dr Octopus. Not Sam Neill, no Philip Seymour Hoffman, but… Alfred Molina!

“Alfred, who?” I hear you cry. Well, Molina (pictured right) has starredin Boogie Nights, Frida, Chocolat and Raiders Of The Lost Ark (the”throw me the idol”) character from the famous opening.

As you can see, Raimi has made a fabulous choice. Not only does Molinalook like the spitting image of Doc Ock, but he has the acting muscle totranscend the potentially hokey material (as Willem Dafoe did with GreenGoblin).

In related news, ‘Zentertainment’ reports that Jake Gyllenhall (DonnieDarko) will cameo as Kletus Kasady in the sequel, setting himself up fora bigger role as villain Carnage alongside Venom in the next sequel!

‘Marvel Comics’ studio chief Avi Arad told ‘Sci Fi Wire’ that the scriptto the sequel is completed, saying: “That’s it. We are done.” The filmis scheduled to open on 7th May 2004. Several writers have been reportedto be doctoring the script.

CATWOMANSo just who will slip inside the cat-suit? Ashley Judd has been theserious contender since the late-90’s, but recently Halle Berry’s namewas mentioned. Well, you can now add Nicole Kidman to the mix!

‘The Hollywood Reporter’ says Kidman is being pursued for the role, still with French director Pitoff attached. Kidman is no stranger to theBatman universe, having already played Dr Chase Meridian in 1995’sBatman Forever.

THE CORE’IGN FilmForce’ spoke with The Core’s producer, David Foster, aboutwhether or not the film will be edited in light of the Columbia Shuttledisaster.

He said: “The picture will open as scheduled, on Friday, March 28 [inthe US]. The shuttle scene remains intact. In fact, in the movie it is avery heroic scene when it crash-lands safely in the L.A. River Basin – afunny thought itself. In every test screening that scene has receivedhuge applause.”

“If I must say so myself, it’s a pretty exceptional visual effectssequence. The only thing Paramount has done with the blessings of myselfand the director [Jon Amiel] is to pull the trailers and cut the fewframes of the shuttle sequence out of them. The trailers will be back inthe theatres this weekend.”

THE LOST BOYS 2Gregory Cannon talked with ‘Sight + Sound’ magazine about the currentstatus of the long-awaited sequel to Joel Schumacher’s 80’s vampireflick: “They’ve been talking about it for years, and I think it’s onlyrecently that Joel decided he’d take a back seat and just produce onit.”

“One idea was to have the whole cast all female, another was to be aprequel, but I think the one we’re going ahead with is the straightsequel. I think that’s what fans would want most”.

Will they replace any of the (then) teenaged actors? “No why? How’s itgoing to look if Corey Haim suddenly doesn’t look like Corey Haim, orFeldman’s not Feldman. That’s who you mean isn’t it?”

DAREDEVIL IIDirector Mark Steven Johnson talked with ‘News Askew’ about ideas for aDaredevil sequel: “Born again [which sees DD up against Kingpin again]would be an obvious choice. The other idea is to do Guardian Devil[Kevin Smith’s run for Marvel, in which DD has his faith tested.] I’dlet Kevin write the screenplay, which I think would be a blast. I’vetalked to Kevin Smith about him writing the next script… I’m gonnadirect it man”.

PSYCHOHe’s at it again! ‘Moviehole’ talked with director Gus Van Sant recentlyabout his new flick Gerry, and he revealed he might remake Psycho…again!

“I’m thinking of remaking Psycho again. Doing a third remake. The ideathis time is to really change it – we’re talking about doing a Punkrocker setting. Viggo Mortensen suggested it. He was married to ExeneCervenka and knows all the right people to get involved – all the rightpunk rocker etc – so he would definitely be involved if we go ahead.”

“Psycho was great, a huge kind of grand experiment project. Very trialby fire. It met with a lot of criticism – but we managed to keep afloat,I think we broke even.”

Somebody stop him! Please!

HELLBOY’Countingdown’ talked with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, who revealedsome changes in the movie from the comic.

Mignola: “Hellboy is probably as close to the comic as he can be, andstill work on film. Abe Sapien is quite a bit different, and the factthat Wayne Barlowe designed the creature makes it a very differentthing.”

“It’s a different thing, because the comic is my vision, the film isGuillermo del Toro’s vision, so we see eye-to-eye 95% of the time. Heknows how to make movies, and on a good day I know how to make comics.I’m very happy to defer to him when it comes to film”.

It also seems the father/son relationship between Professor Bruttenholmand Hellboy is much stronger in the script. “It was only hinted as maybefor like two panels in the comic, but it’s really the heart of the movieand I think it’s the best thing in the film.”

“The relationships between Hellboy and Liz, and Hellboy and Bruttenholm, but Hellboy and Bruttenholm is really to me the thing I love the most inthe movie.”

Del Toro also confirmed actors Larry Miller and Victoria Smurfit havehad to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. Jeffrey Tambor andBiddy Hodson have replaced them.

HITMANAs reported in last week’s DMD, the video-game Hitman it to be adaptedinto a movie. It now seems Christian Bale (American Psycho) is the hotcontender to play assassin ‘Number 47’.

SUPERMAN’Sci Fi.com’, ‘IGN Film Force’ and ‘4Filmmakers’ report that VictorWebster (Mutant X) has been cast as Superman in Brett Ratner’s upcomingmovie. Other sites admit Webster screen-tested for the role, but notthat he was successful.

‘Zentertainment’ are so sure Webster is the new Clark Kent that theyissued this statement: “Forget what you’ve heard up to this point.Victor Webster is Superman. All he has to do is sign the three-picturecontract and it is a done deal.”

PETER PANThe ‘Daily Telegraph’ reports that Peter Pan lead Jeremy Sumpter hasbroken his foot, causing an upset on the $100+ million budget movie.

Director P.J. Hogan is reportedly shooting scenes not involving Sumpterand starting blue screen work earlier than expected, but “the shootingschedule… has been thrown into disarray”.

Sumpter is expected to be out of action for a few weeks, which meanswork on the production could stop altogether. Sumpter seems a littleaccident prone as he also knocked his head on an overhead fan lastmonth.

PIXARCGI animation studio Pixar (Toy Story, Monster’s, Inc.) are finallygoing to produce a movie without the joint support of ‘Disney’.

The project they have in mind tells the story of a bachelor mouse wholives in an upscale Restaurant, secure in his ways. Because it is hisplace and he’s the only mouse in the house, life is good; there are notraps, no poisons… until…?

Well, we don’t know yet!

SHANGHAI DAWNOwen Wilson talked with ‘E! Online’ about potential story ideas for athird movie: “We’re talking about it maybe starting in Hollywood andthen going from there to Africa or the Pyramids. At the end, they say,’What’s this I hear about moving pictures?’.”

“When you see the old Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and ThreeStooges movies – they all were sequels. Even though the characters arethe same, they don’t feed you the same jokes. I think that’s one of themistakes sequels do; they redress the whole movie in the same locationand do the same movie again.”

“I feel like we have the freedom to take them anywhere in time we want.I’d throw them in WWI and have Owen pop a champagne bottle and killFerdinand and start WWI – to me, that’s funny. These two guys bitchingat each other in a foxhole!?”

SPY KIDS 3The third film in writer-director Robert Rodriguez’ curiously popularchildren’s franchise will be made in 3D! The film will be entitled SpyKids 3D: Game Over, and is a more sci-fi outing set in a virtual worldcreated by a criminal genius.

It’s already speculated that Rodriguez plans to utilize cutting-edge 3Dtechnology currently being championed by James Cameron. And yes, youwill still need to wear those funny specs!

‘Variety’ later announced who would be playing the virtual realitymastermind – none other than Sylvester Stallone. Rodriguez enthused that“His larger-than-life persona will be a great addition to the Spy Kids3D universe.”

STARSHIP TROOPERS 2’Production Weekly’ reports that production is scheduled to begin thisspring on a sequel Starship Troopers, to be directed by the originalfilm’s visual effects wizard Phil Tippett.

Screenwriter Edward Neumeier will write the script – which is said tofocus on a new group of troopers who find themselves taking refuge in anabandoned outpost as they attempt to defend themselves against theencroaching arachnids, not realizing that a much graver danger isactually infiltrating their unit…

THE TWITS’Variety’ reports that John Williams’ ‘Disney’-based ‘Vanguard Films’has sold a pitch to the studio to adapt the Roald Dahl classic book TheTwits.

The script will be written by John Cleese (Die Another Day) and Kirk DeMicco (Quest For Camelot) and tells the story of Mr and Mrs Twit – thetwo nastiest people in the world, who play mean-spirited practical jokeson each other and mastermind elaborate heists along with their crew oftrained animals. Until, one day, their animals turn the tables on thepair…

UNDERWORLD’Sci-Fi Wire’ spoke with Scott Speedman about this horror-thrillerUnderworld. He described the movie as a Romeo & Juliet love storybetween a vampire and a werewolf [two species at war with each other inthe movie].

Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor) plays the female vampire of the lovingduo. So is Speedman her werewolf other half? Well, no. Scott Speedman says:“I’m not playing a werewolf. I’m not playing a vampire. I’m playing thisintern who gets pulled into this underworld.”

“Kate Beckinsale plays a vampire, and the werewolves realize my strainof blood can save their race, so they track me and try to get my blood.[There’s] a lot of big action. We had a lot of the stunt guys from TheMatrix movies and got to do a lot of the wire training. I had a lot offighting”.

Underworld is released in the US on 19th September.

    Cover** TRAILERS ** The Animatrix
Part 1: The Last Flight Of Osiris

    What’s all this “Ani”-business?
“Ani” is short for “anime”, itself a term used to describe Japaneseanimation (wrongly known as Manga for many years in the West).

    And “matrix”?
Is “Matrix”, idiot – as in Keanu Reeves and slow-motion kung-fu sci-fi?

Oh! Oh, right. I’m… still confused.
2003 is officially The Year Of The Matrix, see? Not only is the sequelreleased this May, but a third instalment is also due in November! Andif that weren’t enough, there are also NINE animated short-moviesreleased throughout 2003 under the banner The Animatrix.

    Excellent! What are they like?
Each one is about 10-minutes long and tell various stories themed aroundthe premise of The Matrix. Some have even been written by Matrixcreators The Wachowski Brothers and all are official (i.e., a crediblepart of the Matrix theology). One of the shorts even acts as a shortprequel to the 1999 original movie!

    This gets better and better…
Just wait for this! The animation company Square have worked on one ofthe shorts, producing a stunning episode using photo-realistic humans! They were the team behind the visually impressive (but hollow) FinalFantast: The Spirits Within.

    When can I download!
Episode 1 is online now at the above link. Be warned, though – these arelarger downloads than your standard 2-minute theatrical trailer! For adecent sized download you’re looking at 30MB – which will take quitesome time over a modest 56k modem! Best quality comes at 90MB!

Ohh! I knew there’d be a down-side. How can I get around this?
Four options. Hope your ISP doesn’t disconnect you and downloadthroughout the night, get broadband and download lickety-split, get themburned onto CD by a friend with broadband, or just wait for there-release of The Matrix on DVD this year – some of the episodes will beon there as extra-features – with more to follow on the Matrix Reloadedand Revolutions DVD’s next year.

    Cool. Any final thoughts?
Pity anyone who hates The Matrix. They’re not going to escape it thisyear!

    The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Oh, yes! I love this show! “Are you local?”
No, no. Not The League Of Gentlemen. This is The League of EXTRAORDINARYGentlemen – something quite different…

    Explain.
Well, this is a movie based on a classic graphic novel by Alan Moore(Watchmen, From Hell, V For Vendetta). Moore’s story is a fantasyadventure that involves many famous 19th-Century faces, such as:Sherlock Holmes, Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Dr Jekyll(and Mr Hyde), The Invisible Man, etc. They all band together to defeatFu Manchu (and a surprise villain) to stop an aerial bombing of Londonby flying machines.

Wow! Sounds cool! Who’s in it?
Sean Connery, Peta Wilson, Stuart Townsend…

Hmmm, not quite so cool. So will this be good?
I certainly hope so! Apparently the movie is quite a departure from thebook and changes a few aspects, but hopefully the spirit of the thingwill remain. It’s being directed by Brit Steven Norrington (Blade), andfeatures some characters unseen in the original comic, such as: DorianGray, Tom Sawyer, etc.

Great! So, good family fun for the masses then?
It will be interesting to see how this movie fares. It’s not awell-known comic adaptation (a la Hulk), it’s not a sequel (a la MatrixRevolutions) and it doesn’t really have a massive fan-base (a laTerminator 3). Also, Alan Moore adaptations have so far been hugelydiluted empty productions – just witness the glib reworking of FromHell.

    Any final thoughts?
This movie deserves to succeed. Moore’s work is almost always perfectfor the big-screen (but gets chopped to pieces in the script process).Norrington’s a strong director, and Connery still has an allure overfilmgoers. I think LXG will be a surprise hit, perhaps filling a voidbetween the truly MASSIVE box-office releases this Summer.
