Deep Throat

If you like head,
you'll love throat

Deep Throat is the first film to be released on the new Cult Porn label, released via Visual Entertainment, which, it says here, specialises in bringing ground-breaking classic adult movies of the '70s and '80s. The flick is the legendary porn film from 1972 starring Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems, as Linda goes looking for help from Dr. Young when she can't find her clitoris, only to be told it's located at the back of her throat - cue plenty of "sword swallowing".

She is then hired as a special nurse to perfect her technique on patients before finding "Mr. Right", or the most well-endowed man she can find. When this does happen, orgasms are cued with shots of rockets launching and fireworks exploding after her orgasm.

Sadly, while Cult Porn's intentions are honourable, not only have the BBFC cut 82 seconds from the submitted version, so many of the sex scenes have been distorted so that they fit to the BBFC's requirements that disallow the showing of penetration, erections about a 45o angle or any close-ups that might make the film worth watching. By distortion, I mean that the images have been divided up pop-video-style so that anything interesting just gets cut off the edge of the screen. The results can be seen in the pictures contained within this review.

Presented in fullscreen, the picture is nothing to shout about whatsoever. Fuzzy, out-of-focus at times and chopped up as previously described it makes the film pretty much unwatchable. The average bitrate is a good and steady 6.1Mb/s and if you have a widescreen TV and want to zoom in on the picture, don't let me stop you.

The sound quality is standard '70s fare and is a bit on the muffled side so is basically exactly what you'd expect from a film of this nature.

Extras :

Chapters and Trailers :

There are 16 chapters to the 51-minute film which is very good, plus clips from Deep Throat, The Devil in Miss Jones and Night Dreams in the trailers section.

Languages & Subtitles :

English dialogue only with no subtitles.

And there's more... :

What the film lacks in content it certainly tries to make up with in extras. There's a five-minute Interview with adult film "expert" David Flint who talks about the three films mentioned above and he also lends his weight to the Audio Commentary track.

The section marked Original Movie Soundtrack with Stills Gallery lasts nearly seven minutes and shows a number of pictures from the film put to an endless piece of music from the film. It's played out a total of four-and-a-half times in case the clips didn't gel first time round. There's also a number of Hidden "Hotspots" dotted around the disc somewhere but I didn't find them. Apparently they lead to text info.

Menu :

While the menus are static, they contain music from the soundtrack and look very good with options to start the film with or without commentary, select a scene or check out the extras.

Overall, this disc cannot be recommended unless you like unintentional laughs. While Visual Entertainment have done a good job in getting the extras together, the whole package is let down by forces outside their control, most notably the way in which the film has been censored which is a shame.
