Dom Robinson reviews

X-Squad

for Sony Playstation 2

Distributed by
EA Games

cover Coming out around a year after the dreadful Fighting Force 2, things do not improve with this game which effectively tries to copy it.

It's the year 2037 (as if!) and terrorists have taken over a security complex, but there's nothing "complex" about the task you are required to perform as it's just a case of move from room to room, shoot the bad guys, collect the power-ups and move on further.

There aren't many games which prove to be a near-instant cure for insomnia but EA Games have succeeded in that field here.

cover It took nearly five minutes of creeping around before I actually saw a bad guy to kill. If you pan around your surroundings, the picture fragments slightly across the middle line of the screen.

The 'upbeat' soundtrack is like everything that's ever go before and there's a constant sound running in the background - the sort you get when you've flushed the toilet and the cistern is refilling (!)

It's also a piece of piss to shoot someone dead before they injure you. Of course, like all typical games of this nature, the enemies fall after two shots at the most, while that only loses you a small amount of energy.

And if all that wasn't bad enough, the levels are too repetitive and dull. The dark graphics don't show up well on the screenshots either, which is proved to the right of this review.

cover Overall, it makes me wonder how this tripe was ever released. Perhaps their X-siblings, the X-Files' Mulder and Scully should investigate...
