Running Point is a basketball comedy series, so while it’s a sport rarely heard about in the UK, it does star Kate Hudson (Sia’s Music), so it certainly has something going for it.
As part of a dysfunctional family, her brother, Cam Gordon (Justin Theroux – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), ends up in hospital after discovering driving whilst being high on cocaine is a bad idea, leading to sister Isla (Hudson) being made President of the family basketball team, the L.A. Waves.
Cam, along with brothers Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Ness (Scott MacArthur – No Hard Feelings) all have various problems and abilities, and it’s clear Isla doesn’t really know too much about the sport – such as whether or not to sack obstreperous player Travis Bugg (Chet Hanks – Fantastic Four (2015)), with or without the help of her assistant/best friend Ali Lee (Brenda Song – The Social Network). In fact, she knows as much about the sport as me!
There’s a lot of chat about making deals, trading players like it’s Basketball Manager 2025 on Xbox Game Pass, plus the introduction of youthful snack seller Jackie Moreno (Fabrizio Guido – Black As Night), who helps Isla as she gets knocked over by two players, while being in awe of her, and yes, it has some humourous lines, but ones that I simply acknowledge, none that I actually vocally laugh out loud for.
However, for me, Running Point feels all very obvious, with the brothers being unhappy she’s taken over – even though you just know she’s going to do better at the job than all of them put together. It’s like one of Kate Hudson’s mother’s – i.e. Golden Hawn – 1980s 90-minute comedies dragged out to ten hours.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Running Point is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from today.
