Scrubs Season 10 is the revival no-one asked for, but the cast clearly have nothing better to do.
They had a mostly great run from 2001 to 2009, ending on the two-parter My Finale, albeit hampered to a degree with Season 7 due to the writers’ strike causing them to cut down to just 11 episodes, and even the last season only had 19.
Well, I say ‘last’ because that was Scrubs proper. There was also a 9th season called Scrubs: Med School – although I thought it was called Scrubs: Interns. Anyhoo, it put the usual characters in a more senior position. So, how come they’re not all expert doctors and surgeons now?
For Season 10, it’s… in a wider 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Why? Oh, but… Phew! For reasons you’ll see, it reverts back to the usual 16:9. None of this 2.00:1 crap!
Okay, so back to normal… JD (Zach Braff) is now doing mostly private work, but one patient has been admitted to Sacred Heart, so he’s back for a visit, where Carla (Judy Reyes) hasn’t aged a day, while Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) have a bit.
Thankfully, they intro music is as brief as it was originally, since along the way, they did change it for a while and extended it. That didn’t work.
In the present day, Turk now has FOUR daughters, and he and Carla “haven’t been out since the Disney princesses were white”. We learn JD and Elliot had got married, but it didn’t last, so as JD returns to the corridors after a long break away, he bumps into a number of former colleagues, although with only the first two episodes having been released so far, we have yet to encounter Perry’s ex-wife, Jordan Sullivan (Christa Miller), as well as the Janitor (Neil Flynn).
Zach Braff looks noticably older, and as good as it is to see John C McGinley (Perry Cox) in anything – especially with his Highlander II performance being one of my favourites – the actor is 66, so would’ve long have retired by now.
“The Todd” (Robert Maschio) is also back, but in 2026, whenever someone comes out with a risque comment, they instantly get slapped down by the rather irritating head of HR, Sibby Wilson (Vanessa Bayer).
I’d be surprised if Ken Jenkins returns as Dr Bob Kelso, given how that actor is 85, but you never know. However, we will mourn the passing of Sam Lloyd, aka lawyer Ted Buckland, who passed away in April 2020 at just 56, from an inoperable brain tumor that stemmed from lung cancer.
A lot of water has gone under the bridge since the last season aired, and at times, Scrubs Season 10 does seem a bit forced, given that as upbeat as one can be when youunger, you do calm down as you get older.
And in life, you learn things and progress. Just going back to your old workplace is rarely “progress”. I did get a few laughs out of this – including a mini golf reference from JD, but even when there are some natural changes applied, I’m still not sure it can come back long-term. Quite honestly, I think this will be one season and then done. Maybe two at best, since the Frasier revival managed that, and that one was terrible from the off.
Still, the new interns they’ve brought to the cast are starting to bed-in reasonably well.
Obviously, no spoilers as to how anything turns out… well, only the minor one that new Dr Kevin Park (Joel Kim Booster) boasts that he’s bisexual. There’s no such thing. He’s just “not picky”.
I’d be more interested to see what Zach Braff directs next. His debut, Garden State, was brilliant, but 2017’s Going In Style, and 2023’s A Good Person, were both very poor. Maybe he can’t do this all on his own…?
Scrubs Season 10 continues each Wednesday on ABC. I understand it’s broadcast in the UK on Disney+.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
