Sean Lockis a comedian for whom normally a live DVD wouldn’t have been a must-see for me, but since Dave Spikey left on Channel 4’sgameshow, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and which has left a gaping void on that side of the studio called Jason Manford, Seanhas really come to the fore as the top dog which some unique takes of life that few of the guests can hope to match. As such, while I could never get into his BBC3 sitcom from a few years ago, 15 Storeys High, I’d certainly give itanother go now, were it to get a repeat.
This 80-minute live DVD sees Sean coming out with the most surreal of tales, while seamlessly linking from one topic to thenext, including swans and their relation to pub toilets, the smoking ban, how he’ll enjoy being a pensioner by annoying the teenagers, sexism against men when it comes to calling the AA or RAC out to your car, taking a deserved pop at Robbie Williams, inventionsthat would easily work on Dragon’s Den, the classification for films as containing “mild peril”, internet porn that isn’treally porn and the necessity to buy a new pillow going on for years (which it did for me!)
Overall, it’s a fantastic set and well worth a watch. I would say Sean Lock comes across as a bit more family-friendly than somecomedians I could mention, but now and again he does prove why the 15-certificate is emblazoned on the cover 🙂
Note that I’ve not given this DVD an overall marking because the sound, picture and extras play second fiddle to the main aspectof this disc which is the gig itself, and which is the score that really matters.
The anamorphic 16:9 widescreen print is crisp, clean and colourful with no defects whatsoever. The dialogue is clear andthe right atmosphere is created for the gig on this disc when watching in the home.
There are two extras on this DVD, the first being Sean’s performance on BBC1’s Live at the Apollo (28:10) from December 3rd 2007,also presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, which gives you more great material, and then Sean’s documentary, This is WhatI’m Like (17:09), which is mostly off-the-cuff footage while on tour, seeing what he does on his days off, etc.
The DVD is reasonably chaptered with 12 throughout the 80-minute running time, and there’s 2 or 3 in the supplementals, dependingon the length, but the main feature still could use a few more. One every five minutes should be the rule of thumb. There areno subtitles for the gig and the menu features some subtle animation of a squirrel smoking at times, and then puffing as youchange menu options.
