Shrinking is a new Apple TV+ comedyish/drama centred around care-free therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel – Bad Teacher) who thinks nothing of upsetting his neighbours, Liz (Christa Miller) and Derek (Ted McGinley), by having a late night party in his back yard with a couple of ‘ladies of the night’ and seeing them off in the morning.
However, this does not look good in this eyes of his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), and both are suffering following the recent death of his wife, and in turn, her mother. As such, I’m not sure whether he’s finally had enough of the job or is just still struggling to deal with the reality of the situation, since he overshares with some patients about his own life problems, acts a little like a maverick who tries to ignore his training, and tells clients what he really thinks, but… will it work out for the better?
Either way, he doesn’t do everything strictly by the book, since he has a huge TV set up in the bathroom, which looks very unsafe!
But, he knows he needs to be an adult and put his daughter first, as well as getting to know his best friend, Brian (Michael Urie).
Just two episodes are released initially, with each of the remaining 7 added weekly, but so far, there’s a nice addition to the cast of Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) as Paul, another therapist at the same practice, who has Parkinson’s disease, but is amusing and very dry about his condition, with the pair showing good chemistry, so it’ll be worth a watch for that.
Shrinking is on Apple TV+ from Friday January 27th, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. Two episodes are available at launch, then the others are added weekly.
Thanks to our friends at Apple TV+ for the review screener.
