Sniper Elite: Resistance on PC / Steam – The DVDfever Review

Sniper Elite: Resistance takes us back into World War II, albeit with one major change.

This time round, the lead is Harry Hawker, from the Special Operations Executive (SOE), who comes across the Nazi’s new weapon, Wunderwaffe, something big-time powerful, which will ensure the Nazis will win the war. However, this game runs parallel to 2022’s Sniper Elite 5, so while I miss hearing Karl Fairburne voice the game again, and but guess if they always had the same character, some people would say it’s getting samey, so you can’t win, Karl can’t be in two places at once…

…Unless Rebellion take a lead from Universal Soldier and clone him. Ooh, there’s an idea 😀

I understand Harry was in the co-op multiplayer mode from the previous three games, but then I only play the single-player missions, hence haven’t come across him before.

As before, though, you can carry out missions mostly in any way you like, since it’s a sandbox environment to run around in, and they don’t have to be completed in any particular order. Still, some will reveal themselves later into the mission, but then I’m trying to complete them in the most direct route, anyway.

First-up, I love being back in this environment, and while first time, it takes me forever to get through a mission, I’m like Peter Capaldi in that awful Doctor Who episode, where he spent two million years trying to bash through a ridiculously-strong wall, constantly getting killed. It won’t take me that long to finish the game, but you get the idea, and this is on regular difficulty!

And who doesn’t want to play each attempt at a X-Ray Kill-Cam shot over and over, as Nazi internal organs are maimed in even more gory ways? 😀

DON’T DO *THIS* in SNIPER ELITE RESISTANCE! #Shorts – DVDfeverGames

I do have a few issues that I’ve come across so far, though. Firstly, I can’t seem to get the baddies appearing on the map, to make it easier to find them. I’m not sure if that’s in a setting I’ve missed, since once you attract their ire, small yellow markers would pop up when they’re curious, then turning red when they’re gunning for you. Now, they seem to be sort-of glowing yellow, then red?

I also don’t seem to get notified if I’ve killed them all, as I’m sure I blew them all away in one area, but didn’t get an ‘All Clear’.

Additionally, faces look a bit odd when they’re face-on, as shown from the thumbnail on my Behind Enemy Lines mission walkthrough (see bottom video). Games can be like that, though, when you’re meant to only be looking at them from behind, seeing the action unfold in front of them, not really turning them round to look at their faces while the game is playing – as I did in this case, as I knocked the guy unconscious. Even The Last Of Us Part II was like that, when a cut-scene would morph into that level’s gameplay, with you now facing behind Ellie, for example, but turn her around to face you, and the facial detail wasn’t anywhere near as strong.

Plus, why do I often have to select something twice, whether a grenade or bandage? I select it once, and it doesn’t take effect. And I only realise when I go to try and patch myself up with the bandage, only to find I’m making matters worse by readying to throw a grenade at myself! WTF?! When you’re being shot at, you don’t have the luxury of time to figure these things out! I’ve had that happen in previous games, though, so it’s still causing an issue.

As a minor thing, all French accents reading out English dialogue feels like I’m watching ‘Allo ‘Allo.

Sniper Elite: Resistance | Beginner’s Guide – Rebellion

Yes, you’re in France, and one thing I haven’t come across is the new Propaganda missions. I did find one Propaganda poster in the second mission, Dead Drop, and expected to come across three more, but didn’t see any while on my travels.

There’s also a way to customise your weapons, another similarity to The Last Of Us being that this option comes only when you stumble across a workbench, although I didn’t have any options to improve upon what I had. Still, when I left the workbench, Harry still said a stock message along the lines of, “Yes, that’s much better”.

Similarly, after I’ve died and respawned, Harry’s sometimes said, “It’s nice and quiet”… while I’m being shot at by 100 Nazis, while church bells clang in the distance!

Still, for the time being, whatever weapon you have and as much as I love to do a sniper shot with the kill-cam, few things being giving a Nazi a good, hard punch in the face!

So, as I continue to make my way through 1944 France – since I’m taking it leisurely, to savour it, and not rush, I’m really enjoying it, but gameplay issues like selecting something twice do irritate to a degree.

Thanks to our friends at Rebellion for the review code for this game.
