Somewhere Boy – The DVDfever Review – Channel 4 – Lewis Gribben

Somewhere Boy Somewhere Boy centres around Danny (Lewis Gribben), a young lad who’s bizarrely been kept in isolation by his father since his mother died when he was a baby. This seems a very odd premise, because it really can’t be good for him, or any child, and as such, he’s incredibly withdrawn.

Circumstances lead to him going to stay with his aunt, Sue (Lisa McGrillis), and their family, although when he’s on his own, he doesn’t know what to make of the real world, of which has been hidden from him the entire time. Cue a number of weird scenes happening, along with flashbacks to a time when his father would tell him to stay in because that’s when it feels save to them.

As you’d understand, he’s finding it difficult to fit in, but still heads out into the garden (cue strange camera angles from the director), and he thinks there’s monsters outside, because that’s what his Dad told him as a kid. In fact, it’s not clear why his Dad behaved like he did.

Beyond that, Danny likes old-fashioned films and TV shows – since that’s what he was brought up on by his Dad, and also starts questioning the world around him, as he hasn’t experienced anything like it before. However, with even more weird stuff happening at times, I don’t think I can take to this after just two episodes, so that’s enough for me. It just feels like they made a very weird trailer and then didn’t have anything with which to back it up.

Somewhere Boy begins on Channel 4 on Sunday at 10.00pm, and from that day, the entire series will be on All 4.

The series is not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
