Stags is a new 6-part comedy/drama where Stu (Nico Mirallegro – Passenger) and his friends head off on his stag do in South America, but whereas if this was a James Cameron film – it would take at least two episodes to get to the nub of the story, but here, events quickly take a dark turn, as they end up in prison, and have to pick a side in order to survive.
We do get to see some of what brought them there, with a flashback to 3 months earlier, with all the lads puking up big-time, then getting to the hotel, followed by the airport on the way back before it all kicks off.
As for the prison, it comes across as the type where you rarely make it out alive, and since it’s on the coast of the country, it’s very ‘Papillon‘.
Naturally, events lead to things going from bad to worse for everyone, often in violent and sweary ways, such as being extorted for money whilst in there, since one of the troup is in need of a doctor.
So far, it feels a bit like Prison Break, except that this lot are not going to be in any way as organised as Michael Schofield!
Only the first episode was available to view prior to release, but despite the dialogue often being quite muffled on my review screener, there’s enough in here to stick with it some more.
Stags is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Paramount+ from today. There are two episodes initially, with further episodes added weekly.
