Four new releases to check out as we head into late February, and the films are: Stalingrad 3D, Only Lovers Left Alive, A New York Winter’s Tale & The Invisible Woman.
Stalingrad 3D
Stalingrad has become hell and paradise for those who were worthy of awards, but the only reward they managed to get was love. How they won, and how they were not defeated, who they were and who was on the other side of the street, what secret they have taken away with them – the movie will tell this story.
Starring Mariya Smolnikova, Yanina Studilina, Pyotr Fyodorov and Thomas Kretschmann, you can read my full review on this film here.
Hit or Miss? Verdict: Somewhere between the two
Only Lovers Left Alive
Adam (Tom Hiddleston), an underground musician reunites with his lover for centuries (Tilda Swinton) after he becomes depressed and tired with the direction human society has taken. Their love is interrupted and tested by her wild and uncontrollable little sister (Mia Wasikowska). This is a story centered on two vampires who have been in love for centuries.
Directed by Jim Jarmusch and also starring John Hurt, Anton Yelchin and Jeffrey Wright, Jim Jarmusch is never one for the conventional type of movie, but when it comes to this one, it looks a bit too weird for the sake of it.
Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!
A New York Winter’s Tale
New York City is subsumed in arctic winds, dark nights, and white lights, its life unfolds, for it is an extraordinary hive of the imagination, the greatest house ever built, and nothing exists that can check its vitality. One night in winter, Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), orphan and master-mechanic, attempts to rob a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side. Though he thinks the house is empty, the daughter of the house is home. Thus begins the love between Peter, a middle-aged Irish burglar, and Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), a young girl, who is dying.
Directed and written by Akiva Goldsman, and also starring Russell Crowe and William Hurt, quite frankly, this trailer looks boring as hell, so it’s no surprise that…
Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!
The Invisible Woman
At the height of his career, Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) meets a younger woman who becomes his secret lover until his death.
Starring Ralph Fiennes, who also directs, plus Felicity Jones, John Kavanagh, Tom Attwood, Kristin Scott Thomas and Perdita Weeks, I’ve had my fill of period dramas where everyone’s dressed up to the nines, and this showed me nothing to make me want to change my mind.
