Suspect Series 2 sees the series return, two years after the first one, the series doing something rather different by the fact that although it has big-name stars in it, they generally get just one episode in which to feature, and no more.
The death of Susannah’s (Anne-Marie Duff – The Salisbury Poisonings) daughter, Christina, was a key aspect of the first series, and… (Series 1 spoiler here)
By day, Susannah is a psychologist. Enter Jon (Dominic Cooper – Warcraft), who turns up on her dootstep, requesting help to quit smoking, but once under hypnosis – and this is in the trailer, thus the basis for the series and thus, not a spoiler – he confesses to having killed someone.
This comes after he talks about his mother smoking, causing her hands to smell of smoke, but his smell of death… Ooh, she didn’t see that coming.
To set a bit more of the scene, Susannah asks her ex – and a cop, Richard (Ben Miller – Paddington 2) to look into it, but his wife, Natasha (Tamsin Greig – Talking Heads), asks Anne to make a statement about something I won’t reveal. However, it’s safe to say that as it’s TV, cops aren’t always exactly on the level, and so many people act suspiciously, as if they’ve got a zillion secrets to hide. Hence, frequently feels a bit clichéd.
So far, I’ve seen three episodes – each of which generally features one main guest actor, as before – and I’ll stick with the rest, to see how things turn out.
UPDATE: I later watched episodes 4-8 when they were actually broadcast, but while it was entertaining, and great to see a number of the guest stars, it ultimately just trundles along until the very end when it just rushes the conclusion in a bog-standard fashion. So, the journey was better than the destination.
Suspect Series 2 begins tomorrow night on Channel 4 at 9pm, and airs Wednesdays and Thursdays weekly. All episodes will be online on day one at All 4.
The series is not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
