The Drama centres around young couple Emma (Zendaya – Challengers) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson – Mickey 17), who are planning to get married, with both talking to their respective best friends – Rachel (Alana Haim – One Battle After Another) and Mike (Mamoudou Athie – Kinds of Kindness) – about what led to their first meeting, amongst other stories to tell on the big day.
For this pair, they met at a cafe, with him pretending he loved the book she was reading, before it goes on to their first date, etc. However, it’s when they all sit down together and share the worst thing that they’ve ever done, and it’s what Emma says, which leads to ‘the drama’ that threatens to derail everything.
I will briefly mention what she says here, but I’ll put it behind a spoiler heading (since it was left out of the trailer), so if you want to go in cold, DON’T read it, but even if you do, I won’t detail the journey that follows.
As the film goes on, and shows all consternation with the preparations for the wedding, The Drama is a bit soap operay – albeit very well-acted – but did sweep me along far more than I expected, generally down to the performance from Mr Pattison and Ms Surname-less.
However, it is quite arty-farty, with a score from Daniel Pemberton, that sounds like someone jumping up and down on a flute.
NOTE: There are no mid- nor post-credits scenes.
The Drama is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
