My BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW of THE LAST OF US SEASON 2!

The Last Of Us Season 2 The Last Of Us Season 2 will cover half of the second game in the series, The Last Of Us Part II, with Season 3 already having been confirmed as being commissioned, because it’ll get the ratings… not because it’s good, but because of groupthink.

You see, no-one’s allowed to say the first season sucked in comparison to the game, because the fanbois start gnashing, whining and downvoting on Reddit.

What they most likely won’t know is that while Season 1 was available for review, Season 2 wasn’t*. The same with the current series of Doctor Who (aside from its first episode, for those who could attend a screening in London – so, no joy on that if you live outside of the capital). When something’s not available for review, it means it sucks.

(*Well, it was only available for those big outlets who were guaranteed not to be truthful, and who would just post puff-pieces like Indiewire. That said, the official reason always given is that they want to avoid spoilers leaking out, and there are some that break embargoes. I’ve seen people who’ve done both. Personally, I have never broken an embargo and I don’t leak spoilers, either. It’s really shit on those outlets like mine, who play by the rules, but some big outlets still get to see it and review it first, because it means we’re not on an even playing field, and I consider everyone to be equal, and they SHOULD be equal.)

Season 3 will cover the rest of the second game. Quite whether it’ll all follow the same paths, I doubt it. The second game followed Ellie’s path up until a certain point, then went back to the beginning and forced you to play through as its main antagonist, Abby. So, multiple times, because of reasons that will become apparent, I just wanted to let her die… but you can’t.

Bella Ramsey (Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget) is still completely out of her depth as Ellie. I still maintain that Sadie Sink would’ve made a much better Ellie, and the same goes for Pedro Pascal as Joel. He’s in far too many things, so needs to take a day off, from every job.

This time round, Ellie’s girlfriend, Dina isn’t Indian, but now half-Peruvian, and played by Isabela Merced (Superman). The game got a lot of hate, partly because of the way that the plot plays out, and partly from those incels who can’t understand that two women together is legally allowed.

Well, they get the same film recommendation as that from Guard Falzon in Con Air: “I’ll Never Make Love to a Woman on the Beach Again”.

The Last Of Us Season 2

Ellie… by Temu.

Catherine O’Hara (The Studio) takes the role of the first new character, who wasn’t in the game, as Joel’s therapist, Gail. We don’t need to hear him moaning about how he feels bad for lying to Ellie about the situation with the Fireflies, because he has plenty of times to point that out in the game. Maybe they just summarised it into one scene for the series.

Other newbies also brought in are Kat (Noah LamannaDream Scenario), who was Ellie’s ex prior to the start of this series, and she’s done nothing of interest as of yet. Tommy’s wife, Maria, has had a race-swap change from white to black, now played by Rutina Wesley. Albeit part of the game, so not completely new, Jesse (Young MazinoOpus) seems fine so far, but then he’s mostly a placid character.

Abby (Kaitlyn DeverApple Cider Vinegar) first appears early on, with her band of cohorts, talking about tracking Joel down. We know they want to kill him, but they don’t explain why. Quite frankly, when that situation entered the chat in the game, it was a spellbinding moment. Here, it’s shot its bolt early and completely missed the target.

Back to the plot, though, and as Ellie and Dina go out on a recce, we get one of the latter bad jokes, which were brought into the game. And as the plot for the programme feels like it’s on random-shuffle by comparison to the game, the opener also has Dina and Ellie going after Clickers in the building with the Employee Of The Month board. Although this doesn’t the safe and how you get to open it, you can see how that plays out in the game.

Even seeing Ellie fight with a Clicker is like an am-dram production, and despite watching in 4K, it felt like a workprint shot on video, and with no SFX added!

And there’s still no getting around it: Bella Ramsey really is what you get when you order Ellie from Temu.

Time to get back to the game, I think…

The Last Of Us Season 2 is on Sky Atlantic with the first episode available now, and the rest released weekly on Sundays, although 9pm in USA-time means 2am on the Monday in the UK.
