The Night Manager Series 2 comes hot on the heels of Series 1 from… erm… 2016.
I remember some parts of it, but not all of it, and i didn’t get time to watch it all again before the second series, but we are given a brief run-through of the key events of Jonathan Pine’s (Tom Hiddleston – The Life Of Chuck) first go-round, since we’ve all had a sleep since then. A second book was never written, but a second series was still much anticipated.
This time round, Angela Burr (Olivia Colman – The Roses) has retired – although given she was in the trailer, I would bet my house that she’ll pop up again before long, Hayley Squires takes the role of Sally – a new operative in the field working with Pine, and there’s mysterious people up to no good – who usually tend to have beards and/or scruffy appearances, namely Jaco Brouwer (Gijs Naber) – who calls himself Richard Roper’s true disciple, Kadarov (Ingo Raudkivi), Adam Holywell (Kerr Logan – Showtrial) – known as “the alternative foreign office” – a middle man who connects UK companies with clients abroad “in the shadows” leading to the question of who’s he working for now?, and Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva – On Swift Horses) – who moves around in a shifty fashion like a side quest character from Grand Theft Auto V, also prone to pointing guns in people’s faces in order to get what he wants.
Opening up, it throws a load of names are you, who you know are going to converge at some point before too long, and for a mysterious woman, there’s Roxana Balanos (Camila Morrone – Daisy Jones And The Six), who’s familiar with some, none or all of the above, urgent trips to foreign climes are on the horizon for some of these, and Roper’s son, Danny, also comes into it, as Noah Jupe has starred in many series and films since, such as A Quiet Place Part II and The Undoing.
The Night Manager Series 2 also brings us cliffhangers that don’t really feel like cliffhangers, and the dialogue is a bit muffly, so when Mayra Cavendish (Indira Varma) asks Jonathan an important question, I can’t make out exactly what she’s said, and the previews don’t come with subtitles, so while I’ve seen some of this so far, I’ll check out the rest when broadcast or online, with subtitles.
Thanks to our friends at BBC for the screeners prior to release.
The Night Manager Series 2 begins tonight on BBC1 at 9pm, then moves to Sundays at the same time.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
Once broadcast, the episodes will be on BBC iPlayer.
