Too Much is a new Netflix comedy/drama which has already committed the cardinal sin of making me think of the 1997 Spice Girls No.1 Xmas single, even though it has nothing to do with it, and since the TV series is the brainchild of Girls‘ Lena Dunham…. Thanks, Lena(!)
The series follows Jessica (Megan Stalter) moving from the US to London, because she’s been dumped by her boyfriend, Zev (Michael Zegen – The Penguin), and now he’s getting married to social media influencer Wendy (Emily Ratajkowski), leading to rather an obsession with her.
Before heading across the big pond, Jessica with her sister’s ex husband who claims to be pansexual. No, there’s no such thing: he’s bi, and sleeping around. Aka, a philanderer.
On a lighter note, her 13-year-old brother has more common sense than anyone, and who better to have playing your grandma than Cheers legend Rhea Pearlman!
Unfortunately, Jessica has an over romanticised impression of London, after watching the Sense and Sensibility adaptation from 1995, with Alan Rickman, and imagines Merchant Ivory-type locations from her Air BnB stay at the Hoxton Grove Estate… which is a flat in a council estate.
On the plus side, she works in marketing for the one and only Richard E Grant (Death Of A Unicorn), and love isn’t far away a she soon meets grunge band frontman Felix (Will Sharpe – A Real Pain), although I do question that while he tries to take her clothes off, why does she leave her bra on? Ah, it’s modern TV…
Personally, it’s clear to me that Too Much is… exactly that for the straight male audience. Women will lap it up, no doubt, and like Girls, it’ll probably also run for six seasons.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Too Much is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from today.
