“Once you hit the top, the only way is down”
When it comes to Top Boy, I think it’s a great piece of entertainment. I don’t always follow the lingo used, although I can empathise with the characters because, I, too, have been to the shops for food & to get a paper. Not as difficult as they make out…
Seriously though…
Exposing the harsh reality of a drug-fuelled underworld, the second season of BAFTA award-winning crime drama Top Boy presents a frighteningly realistic depiction gang life on London’s streets. This gritty and gripping drama is released on DVD on 16 September 2013.
Returning cast from the critically acclaimed first season includes; Ashley Walters (Outcasts, Hustle, Bullet Boy) as Top Boy ‘Dushane’, Kane Robinson (one of the UK’s rising Grime artists) as Sully; Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Bad Girls, Eastenders) as Lisa; David Hayman (Trial and Retribution, The Domino Effect) as Joe; Giacomo Mancini as Gem; Malcolm Kamulete as Ra’Nell; Shone Romulus as Dris and Xavien Russell as Michael. Joining the cast is the brilliant Lorraine Burroughs who plays Dushane’s new love interest Rihanna.
Having forcibly removed the kingpin of the estate’s drugs industry, charming and smart 27 year-old Dushane (Walters) has finally made it as ‘Top Boy’, securing his largest ever drugs deal with boss Joe (Hayman) but it has come at a price. Not only has he lost the friendship and support of his main ally Sully (Robinson), but police have uncovered the body of ex-rival Kamale who Dushane and Sully brutally killed in a turf war – and they are closing in on the boys.
After making a full recovery from her breakdown, Ra’Nell’s mum Lisa (Duncan-Brewster) lands a job managing a hair salon but just as her life appears to be back on track, dramatic rent increases put up by local property developers threaten to destroy everything she has worked for. Meanwhile, Gem’s (Mancini) reckless behaviour is pulling Ra’Nell (Kamulete) away from the only opportunity he has to escape life on the streets.
When the police finally catch up with Dushane, he finds himself falling for Rihanna (Burroughs), a smart and beautiful lawyer who shows him a world outside of the streets. But when the police put pressure on the boy’s trusted friends for information about Kamale’s death, Dushane and Sully must reconcile and work together to save their livelihoods-and their lives.
Top Boy Season 2 is written by screen writer and novelist Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies, Top Boy Season 1) who uses his own experiences as an ex-hackney resident to create an accurate portrayal of urban lives in East London. The series is directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken (Misfits, Movie 43) and Season 1’s BAFTA nominated director Yann Demange returns as Executive Producer.
Top Boy returns in style, boldly divulging the raw and devastating circumstances faced by young people surrounded by drug abuse, violence and gang rivalry in our inner-cities. Top Boy Season 2 is available on DVD on 16 September 2013.
