The Trip was one of my favourite TV series of 2010 and saw Steve Coogan & Rob Brydon driving around the UK sampling various expensive restaurants while taking in the English countryside, all set against their very different home lives. The follow-up, The Trip To Italy, is due later this year on BBC2 and features: Two men, six meals in six different places on a road trip around Italy – Liguria, Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and ending in Capri.
Directed by Michael Winterbottom, The Trip was released in the US as a cut-down film, rather than a TV series, and the same is happening for this sequel. In fact, The Trip to Italy received its premiere on Monday just gone at the Sundance Film Festival. I really want to see it, but I’d rather see it in its full glory.
One of my highlights of the first series was their meal at The Inn At Whitewell in the first episode, and it looked so fantastic that I went to try the restaurant for myself. I would’ve tried the others too, but they were all ridiculously expensive – except for the last one which was just a simple cooked breakfast and more a by-product than a feature of the finale.
A clip has been released of The Trip to Italy showing Coogan and Brydon debating The Dark Knight Rises, culminating in impressions of Bane. Some prefer the impressions in this show, while I mostly enjoyed simply watching the programme unfold even though very little was really happening.
