Another remake.Hollywood must be low on ideas because it seems likethere are at least two remakes a year anymore. Ocean’s Eleven is a goodone though. While I liked the remake ofRollerballbecause of it’s campy story and a plot that they knew sucked, I liked this one because of it’sintriguing story and and smart plot. The characters don’t hurt either assome of Hollywood’s biggest actors are here.
Ocean’s Eleven tells the story of Danny Ocean (George Clooney) who hasjust been freed on parole from jail. He used to be a professional conmanand he wastes no time putting the band back together. He sees his oldpartner Rusty (Brad Pitt) and they get the rest back. They get each conenlisted until their are eleven, Ocean’s Eleven. They devise a scheme toknock over the three biggest casinos in Vegas. But they are owned byTerry Benedict (Andy Garcia) who has ties to the mafia. They have tofigure a way to cut the power to the vaults and get in so they can walkout with a fortune. A smart script and great characters are what makesthis movie so fun.
Ocean’s Eleven is all about fun and comedy. But it does have it’s flawsthough. The ending, while great, is still a little confusing. Maybe Ijust didn’t watch it well enough. But despite that, it’s still a greatmovie. At least Warner treated an average movie with a great remake.That’s why they shouldn’t have madeThe Time Machineif they knew it wouldn’t come close to the original. I have a bad feeling about theremake of Dawn of the Dead though. But seeing Ocean’s Eleven gives me alittle bit of confidence.
Into the disc. Warner has done a good job with the transfer. It looks asif filters were used to give the film a sort of dark glossy feel. It’sconveryed well onto the DVD but it seems a little dark sometimes. I didnot notice any pixelization or compression artifacts.
The sound is presented in 5.1 and 2.0. Both are good for the movie. Justdon’t expect to have your system get that much of a workout.
The extras are getting pretty average for Warner anymore. I’ll neverforget the terrible job on the Harry Potter DVD extras though. 2featurettes, 3 trailers and some DVD ROM games. The highlight are thecommentaries which feature a few of the stars from the movie. Most ofthe time commentaries just feature the writer or director, this is awelcome addition.
Overall, if you like fun lightheated comedy then this is the place tobe. Great acting and a clever script make this a very good remake.
