Going straight in the UK Top 100 Music chart at No.1 is Lorde with Royals and it’s a heavily-produced song for this 16-year-old singer from New Zealed and… it’s okay, but No.1? Really? Someone’s hype machine has been working overtime. As such, OneRepublic drop to No.3 with Counting Stars, and it sounds like Coldplay on a day when they can’t be arsed to put the effort in. There’s not much better at No.2 with James Arthur singing You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You. Cover version time already? He’s run out of ideas… Far better than anything new in the charts is one of this week’s new releases: Erasure with their cover version of the sacred Christmas carol Gaudete, the best known version of it being from Steeleye Span who took it to No.14 in 1973. Erasure’s new version is simply awesome! And great to see something new done with the track as opposed to a straight-forward cover version, although I do hope they’ve done a traditional version too, as in this case, that would be quite a treat.
