Untamed opens with some Vertical Limit-style mountain shenanigans, as two mountain climbers get a shock to the system, when a friend drops in…
Okay, not quite a friend, but a woman’s body appears to fall from the summit, but did she just run off by her own accord, or was she pushed, or did someone chase her? Either way, the situation gives this six-part drama quite a startling opening scene.
As more bodies turn up, there’s plenty of questions to be answered – not least why one of the climbers isn’t wearing a helmet – and attempting to solve this is National Parks Service special agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana – Hanna), who’s partnered up with new-to-the-area and a bit wet behind the ears, Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago) with her young son.
Her son’s not working with them, you understand. He just lives with her. Anyway…
Going back to the lack of helmets, and the same goes for the two leads when they go investigating on horseback around the huge park, looking for clues and encountering squatting hippies, who are less than helpful, and really should be moved on, but the park is huge, and if you shift them from one spot, they’ll just move to another.
On the plus side, Untamed has a decent cast, with Bana and Ms Santiago fulfilling their roles well, with decent support from Rosemarie DeWitt (Smile 2), as Kyle’s ex-wife, Jill. Sam Neill (Jurassic World Dominion) is here as Kyle’s long-time colleague Paul Souter, but Neill does rather sit on his laurels, these days.
On the downside, it does get a bit clichéd and soap-operay at times, as various characters have suffered personal tragedies, plus Kyle being an alcoholic divorcée. Additionally, it gets a bit meandering as it goes on into the middle section, and goes on with daft things like someone threatening someone else in public, like 5-year-olds.
However, Untamed is mostly a solid thriller from start to finish, even if it does feel like it’s bringing in too many characters on occasion, and although this is just a one-off series, the park is so picturesque, they could do another, surely?
