Windfall is a film where all three leads are some of the producers, as well as one having co-written it. None of the characters have a proper name, so I’ll just refer to the names of the actors.
Jason Segel breaks into the empty holiday home of tech billionaire Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), but when the latter and his wife, Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), turn up for a last-minute hollybobs, it’s a situation that looked rather ridiculous from the trailer, but how will it fare as a full-length film?
Well, we initially see Jason breaking in, lounging about, and even relieving himself in the shower! Ugh! I’d even just hate the fact he’s walking around inside the house in his shoes! Take them off when you’re indoors! And then the couple try to bargain with him once they realise he’s entered their abode.
They just want him to leave, but he’s determined to put them through the usual kidnapper rigmarole…
And that’s the problem with Windfall. It acts like it’s trying to satirise an intruder/kidnapper film, such as when they keep taking the piss out of his half-arsed made-up plans to tie them up or barricade them in a particular room, but instead, it’s just quite dull.
Initially, I felt it’s like 10 minutes of plot in a 90-minute film. And then amongst seeing Jason wanting to extort them for a lot of cash, along with other aspects, I thought this is such a stupid film.
Okay, maybe “10 minutes of content” was unfair… there’s about 20.
Windfall is on Netflix now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
