Robocop Gameboy Theme on Ariston 1994 advert – BEST ADVERT EVER?

Robocop Robocop is one of the most iconic movies of the 1980s, and of all its videogame incarnations, it was the Gameboy theme which stuck out the most, and in 1992, white goods manufacturer Ariston used it in their mesmerising advert to promote their range of fridges, freezers, ovens, washing machines and so on. The longest version of the advert runs for almost two-and-a-half minutes and has to be seen to be believed.

Ariston ends with the word ‘on’, so the super clever idea, from advertising agency Gold Greenless Trott, to make a repetitive advert with the tagline ‘on and on… and Ariston’ paid off big-time for them back in the day. You don’t hear from them much these days – in the UK at least, which is a shame, but perhaps they should bring back an ad like this, since so many adverts try to hook you in by being annoying. FEW hook you in by being amazing.

So, is it the best advert ever??

Thanks to Retro Game Videos on Facebook for reminding me about this marvel, and it’s was also one of the eight tracks chosen by Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker for his Desert Island Discs in January 2018, and you can still hear that programme, in the UK, for one year from its broadcast. To him, the Robocop Gameboy theme was the epitome of all videogame music.
