Big Mistakes is a madcap black comedy, opening with the rather touching subject of a family’s grandma (aka Nonna, in Italian terms) who’s dying, yet the matriach of the family, Linda (Laurie Metcalf – Scream 7), insists they still go ahead with an ‘early birthday party’ for her, as she’s not expected to make it to her actual big day.
Nicky’s (Dan Levy – Smurfs, and I know he’s in Schitt’s Creek, but I still haven’t seen that) a Priest, who’s clearly sick of the profession – given how he has to hide his boyfriend from the congregation, as “I can be gay, but non-practicing”, while his sister, Morgan (Taylor Ortega – Another Simple Favor), is equally at a crossroads in life, not know which way to turn next.
This series does highlight the mad situations you can get in a store, in this case when Morgan wants to buy a necklace, but the grumpy guy on the till berates her for the fact the one she’s looking at is “display only”. When asked to bring one from the stock in the back, he moans back that the display model is the last one… and STILL won’t sell it to her.
Why are some people in customer service, such arseholes?
It’s safe to say, that despite getting the necklace, it needs to go back to the shop, but although the trailer does show that the owner is rather unhinged, I’ll avoid any mention of what happens in that, since it’s best to come to it fresh; and events that follow certainly throw up some surprises, making for something that’s pretty damn good.
The comedy comes in trying to apply real-world logic to the most ridiculous of situations, but it does work, along with dark comedy moments, such as when it’s told how one of Nonna’s friends slipped at Five Guys, “so she’ll be in hospital for the rest of her life” 🤣
Big Mistakes has rather too much shouting, even if it does work to a large degree, but theirs was no mistake to make this, and I am enjoying it.
