Another Simple Favor (aka Another Simple Favour, in any territory that can spell) comes seven years after A Simple Favour, and after all this time, I’m not sure who was clamouring for a sequel, but here we are.
At the point of starting this, I didn’t remember too much about that first film, other than that it was surprisingly good for a Paul Feig and Blake Lively film. However, as food vlogger Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick – Woman Of The Hour) is ditched her Youtube channel in favourite of writing novels about true crime, Emily (Lively) walks back into her life at one of her book readings, inviting her to her forthcoming wedding to mafia member Dante Versano (Michele Morrone).
It doesn’t take long before Emily’s ex-husband, Sean (Henry Golding), is being an aerosol, and someone comes in to kill him, in a situation in which there’s no way glass would shatter like that.
But who did it? Emily? Stephanie? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor?
Amongst the rest of the cast, for some reason, Stephanie brings along her assistant, Vicky (Alex Newell), but that character just seems to be along for the rest to fulfil the apparently-essential role of “shouty black woman”.
As it goes on, Another Simple Favour gets insanely stupid, feels so much like a retread of the first, and there’s no way that Stephanie would go anywhere with Emily after the events of that film, even if it was an all-expenses-paid trip to Europe.
Overall, while the first film was great, I didn’t hate this sequel, but it was completely redundant and unnecessary.
Maybe we’ll get a third film, where Stephanie exposes Blake Lively’s lies in her allegations about It Ends With Us co-star/director Justin Baldoni, since she only decided to spill the alleged beans once the film was out of cinemas, and had sold the majority of its DVDs?
As an aside, Paul Feig also gives himself an onscreen, credited cameo in a late scene as a solicitor.
NOTE: There is NO mid- or post-credits scene, but the film does actually set up a potential third film.
For some reason, this film was not available for review prior to release. Sure, it’s poor, but then at least it wasn’t Holland.
Another Simple Favor is on Prime Video now. It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
