Break Clause centres around young couple Ben (Samuel Bottomley – California Schemin’) and Lil (Lara Ricote – Make That Movie), who have just moved to that there London at a mere 22 years of age. Ah, young love!
However, while at first, you get the feeling he’s going to miss his mates from back home, and while she’s met another American young lady in the same apartment block, he blurts it out that on his final night out, he did the dirty deed with some random woman in a pub’s disabled toilet…
Still, at least he didn’t do it in their bed, eh?
So, now they’ve split up, but are committed to six months together, due to the rental agreement. Hence, he’s stuck with trying to find a job, whilst also tutoring a young schoolboy… except on the same night while she has a first date in the next room. AWKWARD!
Break Clause is passable, but it is all a bit ridiculous. And if this was the ’80s, this mismatched comedy would have canned laughter galore. Thankfully, we’ve moved on from that.
However, it is interesting that the end credits show this features an “Intimacy co-ordinator”.
A shame some of the terminally unfunny SNL UK crowd are in this. With that programme’s ratings forever declining, I can’t imagine how that one was commissioned for a second series.

Break Clause begins tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm, continues the following night, and then is on each Tues/Weds for the subsequent two weeks. Once broadcast, all episodes will be on All 4.
