Carrie… who needs a yet another remake of this? The original was great, and the 2013 version with Chloë Grace Moretz pretty much bombed at the box office.
Spoiler alert – the series starts with the final moment of the film, so I will have to mention that…
That’s with the school burning down, and the kids being asked about it, and in front of a camera as if they’re making a documentary, yet you’d think this should be a police matter.
Carrie’s mum, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan – The Life of Chuck), won’t allow her to go to school, so the authorities get involved. Still, before long, she gets into Ewen High School, which no doubt, everyone will soon regret, such as in the opener when the lead gets her period in the locker room, except this time whilst fully clothed. Yep, it’s 2026, so nothing too untoward.
On the plus side, Ms Sloyan is suitably nuts as Margaret, who has issues with the school’s preparations for potential shooters at school, for example, and insists she shouldn’t have to partake; and the same for Matthew Lillard (Scream 7) as the school Principal.
Similarly, Summer H Howell does a good job of replicating Sissy Spacek’s original role.
However, with everything near to Carrie simply trembling every time she gets stressed, falling rocks being seen happening only onto Carrie’s house and no-one else’s, plus random events, such as on a building site with a worker is crushed in a bizarre accident when the ground collapses, and elsewhere, with another man being crushed under his car, this new series just feels like there’s a bunch of ideas thrown together at random from the film.
If it does anything different, then early on, it hints that there’s more than one ‘Carrie’ out there, but it feels like watching a bad cover version, occasionally attempting to update elements for modern life – such as bringing social media into the equation in the girls’ harrassment of Ms White.
As an aside, the opener also gives us a “This Season on…” preview.
Carrie is on Prime Video now.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but if it is in future, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
