Below opens in Newfoundland, 1986, where young Calvin Penney and his family are transporting everything they’ve got for a new life.
However, this also includes their house, during which… hang on, why would you transport a house??
Oh well, the bigger issue is that his Dad is in it, and that’s the him… making me think that surely there’s a window he could’ve escaped through? Perhaps not, since we then meet Calvin 40 years later, in the form of Josh Hartnett (Verity).
After what feels like an age, though, something actually happens, namely a badly CGI’d iceberg in the water. We know from the trailer that there’s some sort of sea creature that’s causing the problems everyone faces, but it takes forever and a day to even GET to that point, making me wonder if we’d ever see anything.
What’s DEFINITELY unwanted is Josh’s dodgy Oirish accent. Was that really necessary??
Overall, there’s not a huge amount going on down Below, from start to finish, and I really can’t understand what the point of it was. It’s a bit like watching Jaws 2, but without any suspense within that mediocre sequel.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Below is on Netflix from today.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
